Guilford Baseball Wins Four Straight; Girls’ Tennis Adds Three Victories
Baseball
Baseball continued its winning ways, adding four more wins to its 11-3 season record. On April 24, the team traveled to East Haven for a 12-2 victory. They visited East Lyme on April 26 and took a 3-0 shutout win. On April 28, the Grizzlies traveled to Milford, dealing a 9-2 loss to Law.
Staying on the road, Guilford traveled to Madison to face Daniel Hand on May 1, handing the Tigers a 5-3 loss. In this game, Andrew Shosho and Bryce Meder were excellent on the mound, combining for nine strikeouts. Shosho was credited with the win. Sam Ametrano was 2-4 with two RBI on the day, including a homerun. Lucas DeShefy and Lucas Ametrano also had two hits each.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse stumbled last week, recording losses in both games. The Grizzlies traveled to Madison on April 24 and fell to Daniel Hand 12-9. On April 27, they returned home to play host to Simsbury in a 10-8 loss. The team is now 7-4 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
It was a tough week for boys’ tennis, taking losses in all five of its matches. The team traveled to Madison on April 24 in a 0-7 loss to Daniel Hand. On April 25, they visited Amity Regional and recorded a 0-7 loss. The Grizzlies returned home on April 27 to host Cheshire in a 4-3 loss. Doubles play lead the way with the duo of Max Banning and Pat Zhang recording 6-0 and 6-1 victories. Nate Grief and Logan Wertheim went 1-6, 6-4, and 6-2, and Aryan Patel and Avyay Yarlagadda won two 6-4 matches.
On April 28, the Grizzles hosted North Haven in a 3-4 decision. In singles, Nolan Stankewich earned 6-2 and 6-0 wins. In doubles, the duos of Banning and Zhang and Grief and Wertheim both picked up two 6-1 victories. On May 1, Guilford took on Notre Dame-West Haven at home and fell in a tight 3-4 contest. All three doubles teams grabbed victories for the Grizzlies. Banning and Zhang won 6-1 and 6-0. Grief and Wertheim grabbed two 6-3 victories and Patel and Yarlagadda won 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. The team is now 4-7.
Softball
Softball picked up two wins and suffered a loss last week to bring their season record to 9-4. On April 26, the team hosted Daniel Hand, posting a 1-0 victory over the visitors. They traveled to East Lyme on April 27, falling in a 1-0 battle. They hit the road to Wallingford to take on Sheehan on April 28, taking a 3-1 victory.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis added three more wins to its resume this past week, bringing their season record to 10-1. On April 24, the Grizzlies hosted Sheehan and recorded a 5-2 victory. In singles, Riley Mullett posted 6-1 and 6-2 wins, Kallie Hagan won 6-0 and 6-1, and Mia Hardy won two 6-3 matches. The doubles duo of Izzy Bowman and Sophie Gochman won 6-3 and 6-2, and Thitida Khambounhounag and Peyton Lynch won two 6-1 matches.
On April 25, the team hosted Shelton in a 5-2 win. Kagan and Hergan both posted two 6-0 victories, and Molly Peterson won 6-0 and 6-1 in singles play. Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner recorded 6-2 and 6-1 victories, and Kate Gasparini and Breann Shelton picked up two 6-2 wins in doubles play. On May 1, the team traveled to Lauralton Hall and won 6-1. Mullett and Hergan both grabbed two 6-0 victories, and Peterson also won 6-0. Guilford also recorded three doubles victories. Bowman and Gochman won 7-5, 6-4. Kate DeAngelo and Hardy recorded 7-6 and 6-3 wins, and Makenna Clark and Juliette Kellner won 6-0 twice.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse suffered a tough week, losing both games at home and one on the road. On April 25, the team hosted Cheshire, falling to the visitors 14-4. They hosted Joel Barlow on April 29, losing 11-7. On May 1, Guilford traveled to Xavier and fell 15-13. The Grizzlies are now 5-5 for the season.
Crew
On April 29, the Guilford co-ed crew team hosted Farmington. In the first race of the day, the Guilford girls’ first varsity was neck and neck with Farmington down the 1,400-meter course. In the last 500 meters, the Guilford crew pulled away, finishing the race in 5:51, four seconds ahead of the River Hawks. The boys’ first varsity race also was very tightly contested. The Guilford and Farmington crews were even halfway through the race as they passed the spectator area next to the lake’s beach, about halfway down the race course. During the last 500 meters, the Farmington boat powered away from the Grizzlies, winning by four seconds.
Outdoor Track
On April 26, the Guilford girls’ outdoor track team hosted Hillhouse and Sacred Heart Academy in a tri-meet, two of the top programs in the SCC. Sacred Heart defeated Guilford 92-58 and Hillhouse beat the Grizzlies 88-58. Junior Tea Davison was fourth overall in the 100 (13.65) and second in the long jump (15’1”). Sophomore Ella Heckler finished in fourth in the 200 and 400, in 28.19 and 63.26, respectively. Fellow sophomore Riley Hickey placed third in the 400 (62.65). Junior Clara Gahm won the 800 in 2:22.54, followed by junior Juliana Montgomery in second in 2:39.36.
Senior co-captain Olivia Kaisin was second in the 1600 in 5:44.27, followed closely by fellow senior co-captain Alexa Suchy in 5:47.17 and Montgomery in fourth (5:47.91). Suchy won the 3200 in 11:44.19. Sophomore Ava Seseske was third in the 100 hurdles (19.28). Sophomore Agnes Batters came in third in the 300 hurdles (52.04) as well as third in the pole vault (6’6”). Guilford’s 4x800 relay team (Daniella Selig, Cassie Ward, Maya Kos-Graham, and Hickey) placed second with a time of 10:46.30, and the 4x400 team (Heckler, Selig, Kos-Graham, and Hickey) also finished in second place (4:21.34). Senior Ella Esposito tied for third (4’6”) while taking fourth in the triple jump (29’8”). Guilford’s dual meet record is now 3-3.
