H-K Boys’ Basketball Takes Two Losses, While Girls’ Hockey Wins the Week
Boys’ Basketball
The Cougars had a tough week, recording two losses against conference opponents. The team hosted East Hampton on Jan. 31, recording a narrow 68-67 defeat. Ryan Erskine led the scoring with 22 points, two assists, one rebound, and one steal. Andrew Crayton added 14 points, six rebounds, five steals, five assists, and one block. Blake Kamoen scored 12 points to go along with four rebounds, two steals, and one assist, and Declan Moriarty recorded 10 points, three assists, and one rebound. Jay Evans scored three points and collected one rebound, and Joe Giaccone added three points, as well. Tyler Perry contributed two points and two rebounds, while Jason Maziarz had one point.
They then hit the road on Feb. 3 to take on Morgan in a 63-57 loss. In this contest, Tate Callender led the scoring with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Andrew Crayton added 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and three assists, and Blake Kamoen had nine points, eight rebounds, and one steal. Ryan Erskine also had nine points as well as one assist. Other point scorers included Tyler Perry (four points, three rebounds), Declan Moriarty (three points, one steal), and Jay Evans (four points, two assists). The team is now 4-11.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op collected two wins and a loss in recent action. On Feb. 1, the team traveled to Ridgefield in a loss against Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon. They bounced back on Feb. 3, traveling to face Woodstock Academy Co-op in a 4-2 victory. A second win came on the road on Feb. 4 versus Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 4-3. The team is now 10-5 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
The girls’ basketball team split the week, recording a loss on the road against East Hampton and a win at home over Morgan. The Cougars started the week traveling to East Hampton on Jan. 31 in a 47-23 loss. They returned home to host Morgan on Feb. 3 for a 49-39 victory. Cheyenne LaTouche recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds in the win. Audra Yazmer led all scorers with 13 points. The team is now 9-7 on the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Boys ice hockey ended the week rebounding from two home losses. The team hosted Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook on Jan. 30 in a 5-2 loss, before taking a second loss at home against East Catholic on Feb. 1, 5-3. Looking to right the ship, the Cougars hit the road to defeat E.O. Smith/Tolland 3-2. They are now 3-11 for the season.
Indoor Track
The boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Shoreline Indoor Track Championships on Feb. 3. The girls’ team placed fourth overall, and the boys’ team placed third. Adriana Garoppolo placed sixth in the 300 meters with a time of 47.54. Grace Mitchell took fifth in the 1000 meters, recording a time of 3:19.35, while Isabel Berardino placed second (5:38.53) in the 1600. Berardino also placed fourth in the 3200 (12:13.01), and Mitchell placed sixth in that event (12:26.87). Caley Napoletano finished in second place in the 55 meter hurdles (9.98). Napoletano also claimed fifth place in the high jump (J4-04.00). Madeline Sanderson (13-11.00) and Garoppolo (13-09.50) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Gabrielle Williams grabbed third place in the shot put (27-05.25).
For the boys, Alexander Lara won the 600 Meters (1:28.00), and Matthew Lara came in fourth (1:30.12). Luke Hedges (4:49.59) and Jack Cozean (5:00.06) took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 1600. In the 3200, third place was Hedges (10:46.55), fourth was Daniel McCourt (10:49.20) and fifth was Cozean (10:50.48). John Panzera took second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.63), and won the high jump (5-10.00). Ryan Ruggiero came in fourth in the Pole Vault (9-00.00).
