Huskies Keep Racking Up Wins on the Pitch
Girls’ Soccer
The Morgan girls’ soccer squad continued its stellar start to the season by winning all three of its games last week to improve to 7-0-3. The Huskies notched shutouts over North Branford, Coginchaug, and Waterford in last week’s contests.
Morgan kicked off its week by posting an 8-0 shutout at North Branford on Oct. 4. The Huskies held a 5-0 lead at halftime and then scored three more goals during the second half on its way to a convincing win.
Sophomore Mia Digiandomenico scored the first two goals of her varsity career for Morgan in the victory. Senior Angelina Comiskey played the first 20 minutes in goal and then came out on to the field to register a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Samantha Way made two saves in net to finish off the shutout.
Senior Taylor Maher and junior Caeley Ayer both had a goal and an assist for Morgan. Junior Katie Martin, sophomore Glenda Zhiminaicela, and sophomore Maeve Madura each scored one goal, while junior Logan Pernal added an assist.
Then on Oct. 6, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and blanked the Blue Devils by a 2-0 score. Following a scoreless first half, Morgan scored two goals in the second half to emerge victorious. Zhiminaicela scored the first goal on an assist by Madura in the 48th minute to give Morgan a 1-0 lead. Then in the 60th minute, Maher scored from Ayer to give the Huskies some insurance with a 2-0 advantage. Comiskey earned the shutout in goal by stopping seven shots from Coginchaug.
Morgan closed out its week by posting a 2-0 win in a road game versus Waterford on Oct. 9. Senior Julia Tanner scored Morgan’s first goal from Maher off a corner kick in the 20th minute of the game, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the break. In the 50th minute, Madura scored from Maher off a corner to increase Morgan’s lead to 2-0. Comiskey made eight saves in net for the Huskies.
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team enjoyed another successful week on the pitch by winning all three of its matchups in shutout fashion. The Huskies notched shutouts over Waterford, North Branford, and Coginchaug in last week’s contests to improve to 9-1-1 on the season.
Morgan claimed a 2-0 road victory against Waterford on Oct. 4. Junior Steven Kinser scored both goals for the Huskies. Kinser’s first goal came off an assist by senior Fabio Silveira in the 17th minute of the game, and his second score came from junior Jake Mastriano in the final minute of the contest to solidify the 2-0 win.
The following day, the Huskies hosted North Branford and shut out the Thunderbirds 7-0. Senior Ethan Madura put Morgan up 1-0 with a goal in the 11th minute. Seniors Tyler Mucha and Jake Bardinelli followed with goals, assisted by juniors Matt Lopez and Joe Morse, respectively, to give the Huskies a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Lopez scored from Morse off a free kick in the 51st minute, after which Madura netted a goal from senior Brendan Daly to make it 5-0. Junior Nick Boudreau and sophomore Oscar Serrano scored Morgan’s last two goals of the game, both on assists by senior Alex Gallardo.
Then on Oct. 7, Morgan traveled to Durham to face Coginchaug and triumphed by a 3-0 score. Gallardo scored the first goal of the game in the 28th minute for a 1-0 Morgan lead. The Huskies went on to score two goals in the first two minutes of the second half to grab a three-goal advantage. Lopez scored the first goal from Mucha, and then Mucha netted the second score on an assist by Lopez to put a bow on the victory.
Field Hockey
The Morgan field hockey team moved to 3-7-1 on the season after taking defeats against Old Saybrook and North Branford last week.
The Huskies dropped a 3-0 decision to Old Saybrook in a home game on Oct. 4. Three days later, Morgan hosted North Branford and lost the contest by a 7-2 final.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Morgan girls’ volleyball team took three losses last week and is now 4-10 on the year.
The Huskies took a 3-0 defeat to Haddam-Killingworth in a road match on Oct. 4. Two days later, Morgan was back on the road to face Old Lyme and lost the match by a 3-0 score. Then on Oct. 8, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Warriors.
