Morgan Boys’ Basketball Completes Undefeated Regular Season
The Morgan boys’ basketball team wrapped up the final two games of the regular season last week. The Huskies secured a pair of victories to clinch an undefeated regular-season mark of 12-0. Morgan earned a bye in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament, and the Huskies will finish their postseason run this week.
On March 15, Morgan hosted Portland and claimed a 76-65 home victory in the final seeding game of the season. The Huskies got out to a 23-10 lead after the first quarter, and held a 32-26 lead by halftime. The teams played to an even 20-20 in the third quarter, and Morgan extended its edge with a 24-19 fourth quarter to grab the 11-point victory.
Junior Alex Fratamico led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points, while senior captains Zach Johnson and Robbie Zirlis added 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Junior Drew Nye picked up 10 points in the win. Senior Jason Cohen (3), senior Cam Carlson (2), junior Connor Duffy (2), and sophomore Cooper Galdenzi (2) all provided points in the victory, as well.
On March 18, the Huskies played a road game against Haddam-Killingworth and won a 61-54 contest against the Cougars. Morgan held a narrow 18-17 after one quarter of play, but then made some breathing room with a 15-9 second quarter. Morgan held a 33-26 advantage heading into the second half, but the Cougars outpaced the Huskies 15-7 in the third quarter to take a 41-40 lead into the final frame. Morgan outscored Haddam-Killingworth 21-13 in the fourth en route to the seven-point win.
Fratamico had another big night with 22 points, and Johnson supplied 13. Zirlis scored eight points, Nye added seven points, Galdenzi supplied six, and Cohen flushed five through the net.
The No. 1 seed Morgan hosted No. 9 seed Hale-Ray on March 23 (after press time). A victory by the Huskies would pit them against the winner between No. 4 seed East Hampton and No. 5 seed Portland in the semifinals on Thursday, March 25.
