H-K Boys’ Hoops Wins Shoreline Opener; Girls Finish Regular Season Strong

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ basketball team finished its regular season by splitting its last two games, after which the Cougars earned a convincing victory in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. H-K has an overall record of 7-6 on the year.
On March 15, the Cougars claimed a 68-50 road win over Old Saybrook. Senior Tony Giambanis scored 26 points for H-K in the victory. Fellow senior Jimmy McGoey scored 14 points.
Three days later, H-K hosted Morgan and took a 61-54 defeat against the undefeated Huskies. Sophomore Mason Gorham scored 19 points for the Cougars, while McGoey had 17 points in the loss. Giambanis and fellow senior Chase O’Linn scored six points apiece, as did sophomore Tate Callender.
Then on March 20, 7th-seeded H-K hosted No. 10 Coginchaug in the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament and routed the Blue Devils by a 78-28 final. Senior Alec Erskine scored 21 points for H-K. McGoey had 13 points, and Gorham scored 10 points.
H-K played at No. 2 seed Cromwell in the Shoreline quarterfinals on March 23 (after press time). If the Cougars win, they will face the winner of No. 3 Valley Regional and No. 6 Old Lyme in the semifinals on Thursday, March 25. The championship game takes place on Saturday, March 27.
The H-K girls’ basketball squad won its last two games of the regular season to finish with a record of 4-8 for the slate. The Cougars, who have won four of their last six contests, are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.
H-K kicked off its week by posting a 49-36 home victory against Old Saybrook on March 15. Three days later, the Cougars played a road game versus Morgan and edged out the Huskies by a 33-32 score.
The Cougars are the No. 6 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and had a bye through the first round. H-K played at No. 3 seed Cromwell in the quarterfinals on March 22 (after press time) and, with a win, would take on the winner of No. 2 Morgan and No. 10 Westbrook in the semis on March 24 (after press time). The championship game is scheduled for Friday, March 26.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainville/H-K boys’ ice hockey team took two home losses during the final week of its regular season.
On March 15, the team dropped a 4-2 decision to East Catholic at Champions Skating Center. Two days later, the squad hosted Wethersfield and took a 2-0 defeat to put its record at 2-7 for the year.
