North Haven Girls’ Hoops Earns a Split

The North Haven girls’ basketball team split a pair of road games last week and now has a record of 3-1 on the year. North Haven took a loss to Sheehan before posting a close win versus Amity in last week’s matchups.
North Haven took a 45-31 defeat at Sheehan on Feb. 16. The Titans grabbed an 11-7 lead in the first quarter and held a 24-13 advantage at halftime on their way to winning the game. Sophomore Julia Ball scored 10 points for North Haven. Senior Carly Fresher had five points, five rebounds, and five assists on the night. Sophomore Emma Liedke collected 10 rebounds in the game.
On Feb. 20, North Haven faced Amity on the road and claimed a 42-40 victory against the Spartans. Trailing 31-25 entering the fourth quarter, Head Coach Tom Blake’s squad outscored Amity by a 17-9 margin in the final frame to walk off the floor with the win. Fresher scored 13 points, senior Olivia Stefanik had 10 points, and senior Sarah Puzone netted nine points in the winning effort. Fresher also grabbed seven rebounds to go with five steals and three assists. Liedke had five rebounds, Stefanik had two blocks, and Puzone and sophomore Olivia Johnson each had two steals.
The North Haven boys’ basketball team took three recent defeats in a trio of home games to move to 0-4 on the 2021 season. North Haven dropped decisions against Cheshire, Sheehan, and Amity in its last three contests.
North Haven hosted Cheshire on Feb. 12 and took a 52-21 loss against the Rams. Then on Feb. 16, North Haven faced Sheehan at home and lost the contest by a 66-47 score. Four days later, North Haven took a 49-40 defeat versus Amity in another home game at Fred Kelly Gymnasium.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Amity-North Haven- Cheshire (A-NH-C) girls’ ice hockey team opened its winter season by playing two games last week. The Blades split the set for a 1-1 start to the year.
A-NH-C took a 4-1 loss to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy (WH-SHA) in its season opener at Bennett Rink on Feb. 16. With the Blades trailing 3-0 in the third period, junior Avery DePodesta put the team on the board by scoring a goal on an assist by sophomore Amelia Launder. WH-SHA came back by scoring the final goal of the night to finish off the 4-1 win. Freshman goalie Ginny Currello made 42 saves in net for the Blades in the game.
A-NH-C bounced back from that loss by earning a 4-1 victory versus Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Feb. 21. Kelsey McCarthy, a senior defender who attends North Haven High School, scored a goal for the Blades in the game. Freshman Abi Fitol scored two goals, sophomore Samantha Drane had a goal with an assist, and junior Mia Dow and DePodesta each had an assist in the victory. Currello made 21 saves in goal for Head Coach John Peschell’s squad.
