East Haven improved to 13-3 with wins over Cheshire and Lauralton Hall last week.
On Feb. 1, the Yellowjackets defeated Cheshire 57-44 behind a balanced offensive attack. Only five players scored for the Easties, but all five had eight points or more. Kylie Schlottman led the way with 15, Olivia Coyle scored 13, Miranda Gladwin poured in 11, Cailey Korwek had 10, and Dana Ross added eight. Cheshire built a four-point lead at the half, but East Haven ran away in the second half, doubling Cheshire's production in the third, 20-10, and then outscoring the Rams 12-5 in the fourth quarter.
After snow pushed back East Haven's game against Lauralton Hall, the two teams tipped off on Feb. 6 and the Easties won a defensive battle, 34-24. The Yellowjackets held Lauralton to single-digit scoring in every quarter, including just two points in the fourth. Korwek led the team with nine points.
The Yellowjackets lost to Career on Feb. 4, 65-56, to drop to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in SCC Oronoque action. East Haven won the second half, but couldn't overcome an early first-half deficit of 15 points. In the loss, Nick Durso scored a game-high 20 points and Conor Reynolds added 14.
East Haven finished in eighth place at the SCC Championship by scoring 61.95 points, overcoming plenty of obstacles along the way. Throughout the week, the Yellowjackets dealt with an injury and a sickness to upperclass athletes, which resulted in freshmen Ashley Davis and Haley Kozlowski stepping into action. Although it was tough for her team to adjust to the late, sudden changes, Head Coach Michelle Maru and company welcomed the judges' critiques and are looking forward to working harder in their upcoming practices to perfect their routine for the next three competitions.
"Haley only had a couple of hours before and after a game to learn the spots of the girl who was sick, which she did amazing. By the time we got to the high school, she knew the whole part and was ready to practice and work on the stunts," Maru said. "The whole team did a really great job adapting to the changes we had to make and helping Ashley and Haley learning their parts in the routine."
