• No arrests were made.
• A 66 year-old man of Sandra Drive was issued a citation for failure to obey an overhead control signal after police determined the cause of a motor vehicle accident caught on a traffic camera that occurred around 3 p.m. at the intersection of West Main Street and the I-95 exit 53 off ramp. Investigating Officer Jay Kaufman was met with conflicting reports by operators as to who had driven through a red overhead control signal at the intersection. Kaufman, who knew that the traffic camera system had been installed in the busy intersection several months ago, called to have the recording played back at the department’s 911 center where the system is monitored. “Within minutes I was able to determine what happed in the intersection and charge the appropriate offender where I may have been otherwise unable to determine the cause without the system,” Kaufman said. Chief John DeCarlo said the department installed the system due to the high volume of traffic crashes and other crimes whose suspects flee the area through the busy intersection. The chief also noted that the funds to pay for the system were derived from assets seized from police investigations and arrests.
