Lewis R. Guenther, Jr.
Lewis R. Guenther, Jr., 81, of Old Saybrook, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loving family, Nov. 20, 2023. Born Feb. 10, 1942, in Trenton, New Jersey, Lewis was the son of the late Lewis R. Guenther, Sr. and Leona (Ross) Guenther.
Having grown up in Clinton, Lewis graduated from Morgan High School in 1960. He then went on to get his bachelor’s degree in history and art history from the University of Connecticut in 1964. He worked for Pratt and Whitney/United Technologies in purchasing for 34 faithful years. He always said “he never had a bad day” and he loved his job, the traveling, and the aircraft industry; he retired in 1999.
Lewis married the love of his life, his wife Barbara (Lester) Guenther, in 1964. They spent 59 happy years together, building a home and a family. Lewis had many hobbies over the years, the Back River behind his home was the center of it all. He loved boating, fishing, and yard work. In recent years, “Slip” enjoyed cruising around Saybrook in his red pickup truck and spending winters in Englewood, Florida, with family and friends. Above all else, Lewis found his joy in spending time with his family and friends, those he held closest in his heart.
Lewis is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his children, Dick Guenther and wife Wendy of Old Lyme, John Guenther and wife Anne of Old Lyme, and Becky Guenther of Old Saybrook; grandchildren, Hannah, Sam, Dan, Emma, Maddie, Margo, and Hazel; and his twin brother Robert Guenther and wife Jan of Niantic.
A private ceremony will be held by the family.
