William H. Skelly, 73, of Guilford and Sebastian, Florida, passed peacefully at Connecticut Hospice on June 8 after a long illness.
Bill was a graduate of Guilford High School and Quinnipiac University. He declined a full academic scholarship at Northeastern University after one semester in order to be closer to his soon-to-be bride. He paid his way through Quinnipiac by working at the White House Florist and playing trumpet in a band. Bill went on to have a career in life insurance and financial planning. He was most passionate about music, loved stereos, and all gadgets electronic. Bill was an avid boater and saltwater fisherman. He also enjoyed skiing and RV camping with his family through his mid 40’s. He then took up golfing and became a member of the Clinton Country Club for more than 20 years. He split time between Connecticut and Florida in order to play golf year round.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Barbara, to whom he was married for 52 years. He also leaves his children, “the twins” Judy and Dan and their spouses John and Kristin. Although he was known as “Wild Bill” to many friends, he was “Pop Pop” to his four grandchildren, Nicole, Delaney, Josie, and Palmer. He spent countless hours as their biggest fan, enjoying soccer games, tennis matches, and musical concerts. Bill was predeceased by his parents James and Eleanor Skelly, and leaves behind a brother, James. He also leaves sisters-in-law Maybeth Canning Zuber and Marie Canning; and nieces Joya Zuber, Heather Canning, and Ashley Canning.
Bill will be missed by his family and friends and they wish him eternal comfort and peace. Over the past five years, we have realized how short life can be and the importance of enjoying time with loved ones. He will be cherished in our hearts and memories forever.
