Guilford Fencing Shines at Novice Tournament; Boys’ Basketball Splits the Week
Fencing
The Guilford JV fencing team competed in the State Junior Varsity Tournament at North Haven on Jan. 14. Sophomore Addison Weed claimed first place in the women’s foil. Junior Jack Rasmussen came in third place in the men’s foil, and Junior Tessa Kissinger grabbed seventh place in the women’s épée. Senior Jack Fusco finished in eighth place in the men’s saber.
The Guilford Novice Tournament is one of the biggest fencing tournaments in the State of CT, and every year it brings together novice fencers for a day of fun, learning, and a first taste of competition. It is also one of the team’s biggest fundraisers for the season. All the money raised goes back to the athletes and helps to fund team activities and buy equipment.
In this tournament, which took place on Feb. 4, freshman Emily O’Sullivan tied for third place in the women’s saber. Freshman Brooklyn Smith tied for third place in the women’s épée, and freshman Anna Hastings tied for fifth place in the women’s saber. Logan Plancon (freshman) snagged sixth place in the men’s saber, while Kate Romanenko (junior) also claimed sixth place in the women’s épée.
Boys’ Basketball
The boys’ basketball team split the week, posting a loss at home and a win on the road. The team hosted Hillhouse on Jan. 31, losing 59-45. Senior guard Justin Paul Hess led the scoring, recording 13 of the team’s points. They hit the road on Feb. 3 to face Hamden, defeating the home team 62-57. The Grizzlies are now 8-4 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
The Grizzlies took a win and loss last week against non-conference opponents. The team traveled to Branford on Jan. 31 and took a 38-27 win, before returning home on Feb. 3 to host Sheehan. They lost to the visitors 48-26. The team is 3-12 on the season.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The North Haven/East Haven/North Branford/Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team recorded a pair of losses last week. They hosted Fairfield Prep on
Jan. 31. The team lost to the visitors 97-84. In the meet, Aiden Cohen won the 50 freestyle, recording a time of 23.40, and Christian Butler’s 261.80 diving score secured a first-place finish. William Cong gave the Warriors a victory in the 100 breaststroke, racing a time of 1:08.15, and the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Josue Bravo, Sam Mayo, Lucas Espinosa and Joey Gould, finished with a first-place time of 3:50.85.
On Feb. 2, the team traveled to Hamden, losing 97-86. Winners for the Warriors included Aiden Cohen in the 50 freestyle (23.66), Christian Butler in the 1 Meter Dive (263.35), and Spencer Carroll in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.88). Aiden Cohen, William Cong, Joey Gould, and Josue Bravo competed in the 400 freestyle relay, winning the race with a time of 3:44.25. The Warriors are now 4-3 on the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Guilford boys’ ice hockey took a loss last time out, falling to Hand on Feb. 1. The team posted a 4-3 loss in overtime. They are now 5-3-1 for the season.
Indoor Track
The Guilford boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the SCC Indoor Track Championships on Feb. 3, at which the girls’ team placed fifth overall and the boys’ team placed 16th. Daniella Selig took fifth in the girls’ 600 meters, with a time of 1:46.70. In the 1000 Meters, Clara Gahm won the race at 3:14.06, and Summer Mangan took 10th (3:31.86). Alexa Suchy took sixth place in the 1600 meter run, recording a time of 5:34.50. Gahm took third in the 3200 (11:54.60), and Olivia Kaisin followed her in fourth (12:05.56). Ana Sadlon claimed eighth place in that event (12:33.75).The 4x800 relay team, consisting of Kaisin, Paige Ponzio, Suchy, and Gahm, placed first with a time of 10:07.85.
On the boys’ side, Mackinley Cho placed 10th in the 600 meter race (1:32.44). Alex Milano snagged seventh in the 1000 (2:48.27) and Coleman Love came in fifth in the 1600 (4:34.90). Bretton Carrick followed closely behind, in sixth place with a time of 4:45.40.
Wrestling
On Feb. 4, the wrestling team traveled to New Fairfield for a meeting with New Fairfield, Bethel, Branford, Haddam-Killingworth, Londonderry (NH), Masuk, Nonnewaug, and Ridgefield. The Grizzlies lost head-to-head vs. Ridgefield, 48-30. Jean-Paul Meguerditchian claimed a victory for Guilford in the 160-pound bout, taking down Ridgefield’s Ryder Dadasovich by pin (3:04). Liam Alberti also won the 195-pound contest by pin over Jaidyn Chang.
The team took a 45-27 win over Londonderry. Winners for Guilford included Killian Thompson (106-pound bout by pin), Dante Bilskis (120-pound bout by pin), Jean-Paul Meguerditchian (160-pound bout by pin), and James Mahoney (182-pound bout by pin). Liam Alberti (195-pound bout by 8-2 decision) and Logan Murphy (285-pound bout by pin) also claimed victories.
In the matchup with Nonnewaug, Guilford won 48-36. Bodhi Climie won the 132-pound contest (pin), Elijah McDermott won the 138-pound bout (pin), and Jean-Paul Meguerditchian won at 160 pounds (pin). Guilford lost to New Fairfield, 49-30. Elijah McDermott claimed another 138-pound win (pin), and Alejandro Colberg-Martinez won by pin in the 170-pound bout (1:56). Other Guilford winners in this matchup included James Mahoney (182-pound bout by pin), Liam Alberti (195 pounds by pin) and Tim Hastings (220 pounds by pin).
