A routine motor vehicle stop in East Haven led to a gun arrest on March 22 after a convicted felon was found in possession of a sawed off shotgun.

According to East Haven Police, Sgt. Kevin Klarman was on a routine patrol on Frontage Road on March 22 at 3:23 p.m. when a black Nissan Armada passed him at a high speed. Klarman followed the vehicle as it continued to drive recklessly, weaving in and out of lanes and, at one point, cutting off another vehicle. A motor vehicle stop was initiated on Frontage Road near the Home Depot Plaze and the driver was identified as Roman Koffman, 34, of Seymour. Koffman was unable to provide a valid driver's license.

After speaking with Koffman and his pasenger, Sgt. Klarman asked both individuals to exit the vehicle. Once the occupants had exited the vehicle officers conducted a search and found a red canvas bag in the backseat containing a  12 gauge shotgun, a Silver Iver John "Lightning Express" revolver, a single shot black powder antique pistol, a black revolver with no grips, and several different types of ammunition. Upon further inspection of the shotgun, there were evident grind marks on the barrels indicating that it had been cut down and filed. The rear butt stock was also cut down and shaved to make a pistol type grip. A COLLECT check further revealed that Koffman is a convicted felon who is prohibited by possessing firearms or ammunition.

Koffman was arrested and trasnported to the East Haven Police Department where we was processed. He was charged with carrying weapons in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a sawed off shotgun, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

He was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in New Haven on April 20.
