Read to Feed Caps Successful Summer Reading Program
This year, the Acton Public Library children’s Summer Reading Program gave children the opportunity to turn their time spent reading into making beaded chain-necklaces as part of the Read to Bead program, or into pet food donations, as part of the Read to Feed program. For the Estevez children Sofia, Emma, and Christian, the decision was easy. Prior to moving to Old Saybrook the family lost everything in an all-house fire, including their two beloved dogs. When the children learned that they could participate in the Summer Reading Program and turn their reading time into donated pet food, they immediately wanted to help the animals. They spent all of their Acton Reading Bucks on pet food, along with a lot of other concerned readers.
Westbrook Social Services Coordinator Elizabeth Carpenter was thrilled to receive the pet food in an ongoing effort to help senior clients feed their pets.
“For many elderly seniors on a fixed income, their pet is their only family and they will put aside their own needs in order to feed their dog or cat. This pet food donation is a great help!” Carpenter said.
The Acton Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is open to all children and teens every summer, and is fully sponsored by the Friends of the Acton Library.
