Guilford High School National Honors Society Fall Induction
On Nov. 7, Guilford High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed members Elizabeth Abernathy, Nicholas Antony, Giana Cardonita, Angelina DiFranco, William Dinauer, Simone Goetsch, Isabelle Greene, Madeline Greene, Caden Kozub, Mikhala Kukta, John LaFrance, Erik Mastalerz, Isaiah Maynard, Hugh Medvecky, Lauren Mitzelfelt, Erin Norton, Julie Reynolds, Mark Salib, Anastasia Samsel, Ian Slattery, Mia Sweeny, and Mia Tilton.
NHS membership is based upon four major characteristics: leadership, scholarship, service, and character. To be eligible for NHS students need a certain cumulative grade point average, two letters of recommendation attesting to good character, and an application form that demonstrates the four major characteristics. This form outlines their extracurricular activities, service trips, academic awards, and leadership roles.
Student membership is limited to juniors and seniors who are expected to form a well-run organization with offices of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian, and historian. At the beginning of each year, NHS decides on a service-oriented philanthropy to contribute toward through various student-run fundraisers. In addition, students must complete one personal philanthropy that requires 20 extra hours of community service.
