On Oct. 17, 30 children from Guilford gathered at Jacobs Beach for Waves of Freedom, a small program formed by three girls whose goals are to raise awareness about the damage of litter on beach life, coordinate cleanup efforts on local beaches, and raise funds to support local beaches. The girls, Maggie Mandel, Elle Petra, and Lily Riccio, started the program in 2012 as 5th graders at Abraham Baldwin Middle School after seeing the damage left by Tropical Storm Irene and Superstorm Sandy. The clean up was the third annual event that the girls have organized.
