Two-Alarm HazMat Fire Contained in Essex
Fire crews from around the region responded to a two-alarm chemical fire at Nalas Engineering on Westbrook Road in Essex on Monday, Jan. 15.
Essex firefighters received the call around 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The fire was entirely contained within the building in an area constructed to contain chemical fires.
Crews from Clinton, Deep River, Guilford, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, the Groton Sub Base and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection all responded to the call.
Assistant Fire Chief Aron Schumacher said that the cause of the fire had not been determined.
"No word on the cause at this time," Schumacher said. "And no injuries. Everyone who was in the building is clear and safe."
Nalas Engineering, located at 85 Westbrook Road, produces chemicals used in weapons and ammunition under contract for the Department of Defense.
