Songs for Uganda Benefit Concert on June 5 in Madison
Two Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) clubs, the DHHS Uganda Club and the Interact Club, teamed up with local non-profit Call to Care Uganda with a goal of helping children globally. The groups will host a benefit concert called Songs for Uganda on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at DHHS.
The concert—the third of its kind in Madison—will feature the Destiny Africa Children’s Choir from Kampala, Uganda, as well as DHHS’s award-winning a cappella group Encore.
“This will be an amazing off-Broadway concert with exciting and energetic singing, dancing, drumming, and some incredible costume changes throughout,” said Martha Hoffman, a Madison resident who founded Call to Care Uganda. “This is a diverse cultural musical experience connecting the community through fun and global awareness.”
Hoffman’s daughter, Haley, leads the DHHS Uganda Club, which is raising money for its second borehole well project at a school of their peers in Uganda through the concert. The concert will also benefit Destiny Africa Children’s Choir’s orphanage.
According to its website, calltocareuganda.org, the mission of Call to Care Uganda, which was founded in 2007, is “to improve the lives of vulnerable children and those who care for them in Uganda.”
Call to Care Uganda has many different partnership projects, including providing villages with wells and building a community center for children in the Kaberamaido District.
“[Songs for Uganda] is a great opportunity to raise awareness and enjoy a cultural experience here on the shoreline that benefits others and promotes community partnerships,” said Hoffman.
The Call to Care Uganda concert is on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at DHHS. Tickets (suggested donation of $10) are available at Flutterby in Guilford as well as in Madison at RJ Julia Booksellers, Savvy Tea, and the DHHS Library/Media Center. For information, call 203-623-3879.
