Saybrook to Standardize HR
Town human resources practices and policies need to be standardized and communicated—this was a consistent comment that First Selectman Carl Fortuna heard in one-on-one interviews he conducted with town government employees after he was elected. Now Fortuna wants to move forward on a project that will begin to address town employees’ concerns.
Fortuna has sought quotes from several human resources consulting firms for a project to audit the town’s human resources function. The study’s goal will be identify what policies, procedures, and documents currently exist and to make recommendations for improvements that the town’s Board of Selectmen should make. Based on the quotes received so far, Fortuna said the audit’s cost won’t exceed $6,000.
Fortuna expects one key recommendation will be for the town to create an Employee Handbook, a common guidance document in most businesses, but one that the town government does not currently have.
“I think this audit is just a good idea. We heard about this [HR issue] from town employees and we are going to act on it,” said Fortuna at the recent Board of Selectmen’s meeting.
