Deer Resistance: How to Make Strategic Native Shrub and Tree Selections

Some native shrubs and trees have above-average deer resistance, according to researchers:

• Arrowwood viburnum

• Blueberry

• Dogwoods, both shrub

and tree forms

• Inkberry

• Juniper

• Potentilla

• River birch

• Serviceberry

• Summersweet

• Sweetbay magnolia

• White pines

• Winterberry

• Witch hazel

To find even more natives, use the UConn database, plants.uconn.edu/search.php. Use “CT Native” under the “Native” selector, and use “Deer resistance” under “Special Qualities.” Also see Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station database: njaes.rutgers.edu/deerresistance.
