Change the Name
I am writing to bring attention to an issue that has long been overlooked in our town: use of the term “Board of Selectmen.” This title may seem innocuous to some, but the implication is one of subtle (or not so subtle) misogyny. Titles like this have historically been used to exclude and marginalize women, and continued use of the term sends a message of inequality. The title deserves reconsideration.
Obvious options include Select Board or Board of Select People. Alternatively, we could try Board of Selectwomen for the next 50 years and call it even. If the title Selectwoman Matthew Hoey rubs people the wrong way, then you understand exactly my point.
Guilford community leaders claim to value equality and inclusion. Changing the name would be an easy fix in line with those values.
