Vote for Democrats
I am new to Old Saybrook, but already I love this community. The people are friendly, the downtown is bustling with activity even as the summer wanes, and the beauty of the coastline is incomparable. As a senior citizen, I hope to enjoy the town’s many advantages for some years to come, but I sometimes wonder whether my daughter, who visits frequently, will be able to do so long into the future.
Like many small coastal communities, Old Saybrook faces challenges – and real opportunities over the next few years. Climate change may threaten our homes and beaches, but the right investments can protect our infrastructure, property, and natural resources. Declining enrollment may challenge the independence of our schools, but providing more pre-K and building more workforce housing can attract younger families. Sprawling growth could jeopardize our small-town feel, but we can still plan and zone for a vibrant economic future.
Republicans here in town may rightfully take credit for our low mill rate and current financial stability, but like many short-sighted politicians eager to please, they are trading away our children’s and grandchildren’s futures. As a Democrat, I cherish the beauty and charm of Old Saybrook, but I also believe we must invest to preserve what we love.
The time to take action on the plans we’ve built is now. Let’s build more affordable housing. Let’s ensure some of today’s taxing potential goes to mitigate climate risks. Delaying will only increase the cost. Don’t let it be said that we were the last generation to enjoy small-town coastal living – vote for Democrats across the board in 2023. I intend to.
