A Huge Amount of Courage

I am writing in support of State Representative Sean Scanlon (D-98). Sean is running unopposed. So why the need to write a letter of recommendation? It is the right thing to do. In this day and age of intense political partisanship, this young man embodies the soul of what we all wish our representatives to be.

He is intelligent, hard working, and honest and loves the area and people that he represents. He puts his responsibility to serve and do the right thing above his own political survival. I hearken back to his freshman year when he withstood intense pressure from his party leaders to endorse Governor Dannel Malloy’s budget; he voted nay. While there were many things in the budget he could support, after hearing from and listening to a great many constituents, he decided on balance he could not support the final version of the budget. That took a huge amount of courage, knowing that as a newbie, he would be incurring the ire of the leadership. He took his oath to represent very seriously. He felt a vote in favor of that budget would be to the detriment of those same that chose him to represent them.

So, what is the right thing for every voter to do? First go and vote. Second, avoid blind party loyalty and vote for somebody who will do the right thing in Hartford. Someone who will have our back, even if is not politically expedient for him or her to do so.

Looking honestly and objectively Sean deserves the support of every citizen in his district, regardless of political affiliation. So I encourage all Republicans, Independents, and Democrats to join me in showing Sean that we appreciate what he does for us and cast their votes for this terrific young man.
