Expectations Have Increased Dramatically
I'm writing in support of a full-day kindergarten program in Guilford. I believe the change to a full-day schedule will greatly benefit both teachers and students. The extended day will afford teachers the time necessary to properly provide clear instruction, explanation, and support to students who are depending on them to establish their educational foundation. Students whose young minds are willing and ready to learn can easily adapt and deserve the opportunity and time to maximize their potential.
The expectations of our students have increased dramatically with the implementation of the Common Core standards. The demands of the curriculum cannot be met by both educators and students with the current half-day schedule. Nor will it allow enough time for socialization and play-also important aspects of a student's development.
Guilford has a well-known history of striving for excellence in education. This can and should be the case for all students, including our youngest.
These children are our future-our potential leaders, decision makers, town board members, and voices of our community. They deserve the best educational foundation that we can offer.
I encourage your readers to support our children and the future of this community by voting "Yes" to the proposed board of education budget at the upcoming referendum on April 8.
