Westbrook Boys’ Tennis Loses in Class S Semifinals; Track Teams Participate in Postseason Meets
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team won its first two matches in the Class S State Tournament and then took a loss against Granby in the semifinal round last week. The Knights finished the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 16-3.
On May 31, No. 3 seed Westbrook netted a 5-2 home win over No. 14 East Catholic in a Class S first-round matchup. The next day, the Knights hosted No. 6 seed Litchfield for a quarterfinal match and won the contest by a 4-2 score. Then on June 3, Westbrook faced No. 2 seed Granby on the road in semifinals and took a 6-1 defeat.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook boys’ outdoor track team recently competed in a pair of postseason meets by taking part in the Shoreline Conference Championship and the Class S State Championship. The Knights finished in eighth place with 44 points at Shorelines at Old Saybrook High School on May 25 and then scored 19th points to take 14th place in states at Willow Brook Park on May 31.
Westbrook’s 4x100 relay team of juniors Vinny Naccarato, John Grace, James Grace, and Brandon Naccarato claimed first place with a time of 44.06 seconds at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Brandon Naccarato finished second in the 100 (11.49). Senior Brett Metcalfe took second in the high jump and set a new school record by clearing the bar at 6 feet-4 inches. Brandon Naccarato also placed third in the long jump (19-1.25).
Vinny Naccarato finished fifth in the javelin with a personal-record (PR) throw of 138-7. Junior Hever Gomez took sixth place in the 300 hurdles with a PR of 44.76, while Brandon Naccarato placed sixth in the triple jump (38-5).
Senior Andrew Carter finished seventh in the javelin with a state-qualifying mark of 136-9, setting his PR in the event by 17 inches. Senior Ben Wallace placed 10th in the javelin with a PR of 121-6.
Metcalfe went on to take third place in the high jump with a height of 6 feet at the Class S State Championship. Brandon Naccarato finished fifth in the finals of the 100 with a time of 11.18 seconds.
Westbrook’s 4x100 relay of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, Hever Gomez, and Brandon Naccarato finished in fourth place (44.79). Carter claimed fifth place in the javelin by launching a toss of 143-9, setting another PR in the event.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team sent several athletes to participate in the recent Shoreline Conference Championship and Class S State Championship meets. Westbrook scored 29 points to take eighth place in Shorelines and then finished in 18th place with 12.5 points scored at the Class S meet.
Junior Halley Pierson cleared the bar in the pole vault at a personal-record (PR) height of 10 feet to take second place and set a Westbrook school record in the event at the Shoreline Conference Championship.
Sophomore Leticia Pires finished second in the triple jump with a PR of 33-3.75 points at Old Saybrook High School on May 25.
Westbrook’s 4x100 relay team of Pierson, junior Allison Brajczewski, Pires, and sophomore Kayla Prisley finished in fifth place (56.3).
Sophomore Hannah Freund claimed sixth place in both the pole vault (7-6) and the long jump (14-9).
Pires finished seventh in the long jump (14-7.25) for Westbrook. The Knights’ 4x800 relay team of sophomore Trinity Walton-Fosque, junior Ava Kaluski, sophomore Emma Bransfield, and freshman Eimy Novillo came in eighth place (13:03).
Junior Mackenzie True took ninth place in the 300 hurdles with a PR of 56.63 and also finished 10th in the long jump (13-11.5). Pierson finished ninth for the long jump (14-6.25), while freshman Lily Freeman took 10th place in the 1,600 with a 10-second PR of 6:03.
Freund went on to claim third place in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet in the Class S State Championship at Willow Brook Park on June 1. Pierson also cleared 9 feet for the pole vault and finished in fourth place. Pires finished seventh in the triple jump (32-8).
