North Haven’s Track Teams Compete at SCCs
Members of the North Haven outdoor track program had an opportunity to represent the Nighthawks at this year’s Southern Connecticut Conference Championship meets last week. North Haven saw several athletes record top-10 finishes when the Nighthawks competed in the SCC meet at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 24.
Junior Ethan Anderson took third place in the discus and finished fifth in the shot put while representing the North Haven boys’ outdoor track team at the SCC Championship. The Nighthawks scored 25 points to finish in 13th place overall at the conference meet.
Sophomore Erika Fronte led the way for North Haven’s girls’ outdoor track squad by placing seventh in the shot put and eighth in the javelin at the SCC Championship. Fronte scored 3 points for North Haven as the team finished in 18th place at the meet.
Anderson recorded a throw of 130 feet-9 inches on his way to finishing third in the discus for the boys’ team at SCCs. In the shot put, Anderson launched a toss of 44-5 to come in fifth place.
Senior Cole DeCusati finished right behind Anderson in both throwing events. DeCusati claimed fifth place in the discus with a throw of 124-10 and earned sixth place in the shot put at 43-3. DeCusati had recently won the discus at the SCC East Sectional Championship with a throw of 143-4. Junior Yousef Gebril took seventh place in shot put with a toss of 43 feet for North Haven in the conference meet.
Senior Matthew O’Connell placed sixth in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 10-6 for the Nighthawks. O’Connell also finished 12th in the long jump (19-2) and 16th in the high jump (5-6). Junior Christian Butler finished seventh for the pole vault by also reaching 10-6 in the event.
Sophomore Jake McCreven finished fourth in the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles (16.41) and then placed seventh in the finals (18.37). Junior Matthew Crispi finished 12th (17.97) in the 110 hurdles prelims, while senior Josh Jasiorkowski came in 18th place (19.24). Crispi also competed in the 300 hurdles and finished in 13th place with a time of 44.96.
Sophomore Andre Ohanyan took 10th place in the 400-meter dash by crossing finish line in 54.20 seconds at the SCC meet. Fellow sophomore Nico Boyle finished 10th in the 3,200 by running a time of 10:10.
Senior Rolan Pizarro placed 13th in the shot put (40-8) for North Haven. Sophomore Dillon Songhurst took 13th place in the discus (107-11).
For the girls’ team, Fronte posted a throw of 31 feet-7 inches on her way to taking seventh place in the shot put at SCCs. Fronte also finished eighth for the javelin with a distance of 86 feet in the event.
Sophomore Rebecca Ford finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36 for the Nighthawks. She was also a member of North Haven’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. The 4x400 quartet of Ford, senior Grace Finch, sophomore Anna Mortali, and freshmen Daniella Rapuano finished in 11th place (4:37) at SCCs. The Nighthawks’ 4x800 unit of Ford, Mortali, junior Payton Orosco, and freshman Grace DeNardis also came in 11th place (10:47). Additionally, North Haven’s 4x100 relay team of Finch, senior Brooke Waldron, sophomore Damaria Williams-Davis, and freshman Brooke LaPierre finished in 11th place (54.84), as well.
In addition to their efforts in the relays, Waldron and Williams-Davis both competed in the triple jump for the Nighthawks. Waldron took 12th place (32-0) in the triple jump, while Williams-Davis finished in 20th place (29-8) for the event.
Senior Emily Cocco finished 14th in the shot put (28-7) and was also 14th in the discus (78-2) for North Haven in the SCC Championship. Junior Erin Knapp finished 20th in the shot put (24-10).
Freshman Amalia Morizio came in 16th place in the 3,200 (13:19) for Nighthawks. Orosco finished 20th (13:58) in the 3,200 at the conference meet.
