Morgan Boys’ Lacrosse Reaches Conference Final; Golf Team Finishes 2nd at Shorelines
The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team advanced to the final of the Shoreline Conference Tournament by notching a win against Old Lyme in the semifinals last week. The Huskies defeated Old Lyme by the final score of 11-8 to move on to face Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline title game. Morgan, which has an overall record of 10-7, will compete in the Class S State Tournament after Shorelines.
On May 24, the 3rd-seeded Huskies traveled to Old Lyme to faced the No. 2 seed Wildcats in the Shoreline semis and posted an 11-8 victory over the Wildcats. With the win, Morgan advanced to take on No. 1 seed H-K in the championship game of the Shoreline Conference Tournament on May 26 (after press time) at the Indian River Complex. Morgan split its regular-season series with Old Lyme, earning a 7-6 home win over the Wildcats on April 7 and then taking a 16-9 road loss on May 3.
The Morgan boys’ golf team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship and then faced Guilford in a regular-season matchup last week. The Huskies finished in second place at Shorelines and then took a loss against Guilford to put their record at 10-4 with two matches left in the regular season.
On May 24, Morgan participated in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Stanley Golf Course and came in second place by recording a team score of 339 at the meet. Portland finished in first with a score of 311.
Sophomore CJ Giuliano came in seventh place for Morgan at Shorelines by shooting a score of 80 for his 18-hole round. Senior Nick Schmidt finished in eighth place by carding an 83 for the Huskies.
Senior Drew Nye finished in a tie for 18th place with his score of 87 at the Shoreline meet. Senior Tyler Greenhouse turned in a score of 89 to finish in a tie for 20th place. Senior Cole Crowley finished in a tie for 39th place with a 99.
The following day, the Huskies hosted Guilford at Clinton Country Club and look a 162-174 defeat against the Grizzlies. Nye scored a 41 to lead Morgan on the day. Giuliano shot a 42, Schmidt finished with a 44, and Greenhouse posted a score of 47 for the Huskies.
Junior Joseph Morse advanced to the final of the Shoreline Conference 1-2 Singles Tournament that took place at Morgan on May 23 and 24. Morse took a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 defeat against Nic Wyszkowski of Valley Regional in the championship match while representing the Morgan boys’ tennis team in the tournament.
Morse had posted three straight-sets victories on his way to reaching the final of the Shoreline’s 1-2 singles bracket. In the semifinal round, Morse notched a 6-1, 6-1 win against Patrick Gavrylchuk of East Hampton. Junior Steven Kinser also competed in the 1-2 singles tourney and took a loss in the first round.
Junior Matt Lopez won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference 3-4 Singles Tournament for Morgan. On the other side of the bracket, junior Nick Bausch made it into the semifinal round after claiming victory in his first two contests.
Morgan also had three tandems compete in the Shoreline Conference Doubles Tournament that was held at Old Lyme and Morgan. Senior Tarik Hasic and freshman Nate Kinser earned a win to reach the quarterfinals, junior Oliver Baker and sophomore Ryder Watson won their opening matchup, and senior Page Guptill and senior Ryan Mansfield also participated in the tournament.
The Morgan girls’ tennis team was represented by a few athletes when the Shoreline Conference tournaments took place in Old Saybrook and Westbrook on May 23 and 24.
Sophomore Molly Vitola competed for Morgan in the Shoreline Conference 1-2 Singles Tournament. Junior Sadie Lyons and sophomore Riley Schmidt participated in the 3-4 Singles Tournament. The duos of sophomore Ava Johnson and Ainsley Corgan, senior Kyra Savage and senior Margaret O’Donnell, and sophomore Sara Morrissey and sophomore Gavin Gersz took part in the Shoreline Conference Doubles Tournament.
