Tigers See Wins Aplenty During Action-Packed Week
Boys’ Tennis
The Hand boys’ tennis team won all three of its matches last week and is now sporting a record of 8-1 on the season. The Tigers earned wins versus Shelton, North Haven, and Jonathan Law make for a clean sweep on the courts.
On April 25, the Tigers hosted Shelton and won the match by a 7-0 score. Senior Sebastien Lowy, sophomore Elliott Booth, and sophomore Matt Vetter each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at the top three singles spots for Hand. Gus Hodge won his No. 4 singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Hand’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Will de Chabert and senior Will Fumex posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The tandem of senior Robbie Washburne and senior Patrick Hennessey netted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, as did the No. 3 duo of senior Ethan Speerli and sophomore Will Dodd.
Hand went on to notch a 7-0 road win against North Haven on April 27. Lowy (6-0, 6-0), Booth (6-1, 6-0), senior Max Gulla (6-0, 6-0), and Vetter (6-0, 6-0) were all victorious on the singles courts. In doubles play, the Tigers’ teams of de Chabert/Fumex, Washburne-Hennessey, and Speerli/Dodd each claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Then on April 30, the Tigers posted a 7-0 win over Jonathan Law in a home match on the Polson Courts. Lowy (6-0, 6-0), Booth (6-0, 6-0), Gulla (6-0, 6-1), and Vetter (6-0, 6-0) all won their singles matches in straight sets. Hand’s doubles teams of de Chabert/Fumex (6-4, 6-1), Washburne-Hennessey (6-1, 6-1), and Speerli/Dodd (6-1, 6-1) also prevailed in straight sets.
Girls’ Tennis
The Hand girls’ tennis improved to 5-3 this spring by claiming victory in all three of its matches last week.
Hand started off the week by posting a 7-0 shutout at Sheehan on April 7. Senior Clarie Langille won her No. 1 singles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The Tigers also received victories from junior Laila Haraj-Sai (6-1, 6-10, freshman Ella Helfrich (6-0, 6-0), and freshman Juliana Jorens (6-1, 6-0) on the singles court. Hand’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Breanna Colonese-DiBello and senior Zhu Zhu Berger won their contest by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The team of senior Bella Vejar and junior Libby Rogers notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory; while the duo of senior Ella Scarice and sophomore Teagan Ariyan triumphed by a 6-1, 6-3 final.
The following day, Hand hosted Shelton and blanked the Gaels 7-0. Langille (6-0, 6-0), Haraj-Sai (6-0, 6-1), Helfrich (6-0, 6-1), and Jorens (6-0, 6-3) were all victors in singles competition. The Tigers’ doubles teams of Colonese-DiBello/Berger (6-0, 6-0), Vejar/Rogers (6-1, 6-1), and Scarice/Ariyan (6-1, 6-2) also claimed straight-sets wins.
Hand finished off its week by netting a 7-0 home victory over Mercy on April 29. Langille (6-0, 6-0), Haraj-Sai (6-0, 6-2), Helfrich (6-1, 6-2), and Jorens (6-3, 7-6) all won their singles maches for the Tigers. Hand’s doubles tandems of Colonese-DiBello/Berger (6-2, 6-2), Vejar-Rogers (6-3, 6-0), and Scarice-Ariyan (7-5, 6-3) also won their matches.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Hand girls’ lacrosse squad improved to 7-3 after posting victories in all three of its road games last week.
The Tigers began their week by earning an 18-5 win at Mercy on April 26. Two days later, Hand played a road game versus Sacred Heart Academy and prevailed by a 10-9 score.
Then on April 30, the Tigers were back on the road to face Conard and notched a 16-7 victory in the contest. Senior Kacie Wines had 7 goals and 3 assists for Hand, while junior Lydia Doraz scored 3 goals to go with 2 assists in the win. Senior Reilly Dolan had 3 goals and 7 draw controls; senior Karleigh Kokoruda scored 2 goals, dished out 2 assists, and had 5 draw controls; and sophomore Haley Wines scored 1 goal to go with 2 draw controls.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Hand boys’ lacrosse team moved to 6-2 on the year by defeating Shelton in its lone contest of the week. On April 30, the Tigers hosted the Gaels and won the matchup by the final score of 21-1 at the Surf Club.
Senior Patch Flanagan scored 4 goals for the Tigers when they defeated Shelton last week, while junior Will Kleine had 3 goals and 5 assists in the victory. Junior Sam Sisk also had 5 assists to go with 1 goal for Hand.
Junior Jameson McParland scored 3 goals, senior Matt Rossi and junior Pete Metz both netted 2 goals, and senior Mike McGuirk had 1 goal and 2 assists in the win. Senior Kevin Sandor, senior Declan DiProspero, junior Alex Cushing, sophomore Chase Docker, and freshman PJ O’Hanlon all scored a goal. Senior Joe Cozza and junior John Hayden both had an assist. Sophomore Jack Orlando made 2 saves in net.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Hand boys’ volleyball team moved to 3-6 after gaining a split of two recent matches.
Hand posted a 3-0 shutout versus Norwich Free Academy in a home match on April 25. The following day, the Tigers hosted Cheshire and lost the Rams by a 3-0 score.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Hand boys’ outdoor track team notched a home victory over Shelton last week. On April 26, the Tigers hosted Shelton and defeated the Gaels by the final tally of 86-64 to improve to 5-0 this season.
Senior Jacob McGeary finished first in the 110 hurdles (16.3) and the 300 hurdles (44.6) for Hand at the meet. The Tigers also received first-place performances from sophomore Kyle Hoffman in the 400 (52.4), junior Nick Montana in the 800 (2:04.5), senior Danny Hilmer in the 1,600 (4:36.4), and senior Jack O’Keefe in the 3,200 (9:59).
Hand was additionally bolstered by victories from senior Morgan Veth in the high jump (6-0), senior Ethan O’Brien in the long jump (19-6), and sophomore Matt Kasper in the triple jump (41-1).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Hand girls’ outdoor track team hosted Shelton for a meet on April 25. The Tigers took a 112-40 loss against the Gaels in the matchup at Daniel Hand High School.
Junior Julia Coric finished first in the 200 (27.6) and the 400 (62.4) for the Tigers at the meet. Senior Aria Foligno took first in the 100 (12.9), while junior Adelynn Arroyo claimed first place in the 3,200 (12:36.8). Hand’s 4x800 relay of Coric, junior Vivian Glazer, sophomore Tessa Burch, and sophomore Jordan Kells also finished in first place (11:22.8).
Baseball
The Hand baseball team stands at 8-3 this season after splitting a pair of recent home games.
Hand began its week by earning a 2-1 home victory versus Hamden on April 27. Senior David Antonetti pitched 6 strong innings to get the win for the Tigers, allowing just 1 run and striking out 6 batters. Brandon SanMarco came in to pitch the seventh inning and fanned 2 hitters to get his second save of the year. Senior Connor Powell had 2 hits with an RBI, while senior Evan Mastrobattisto hit a double for the Tigers.
Two days later, the Tigers hosted Xavier and lost to the Falcons by a 13-0 score. Seniors Will Kranzler and Jeff Pinover had hits for Hand.
Softball
The Hand softball team moved to 6-4 on the season after winning one its three games last week.,
The Tigers kicked off their week with a 12-4 road win against Wilbur Cross on April 25. Two days later, Hand took a 10-3 defeat to Amity in another road game. Then on April 29, the Tigers hosted East Haven and lost to the Yellowjackets by a 12-6 score.
Girls’ Golf
The Hand girls’ golf team opened up its season by competing in three matches last week. The Tigers came away with one victory for a 1-2 start to the campaign.
Hand took a 197-227 home loss versus Amity in its season opener at Madison Country Club on April 25. Then on April 27, the Tigers hosted East Lyme and defeated the Vikings by the final score of 226-256. The following day, Hand took a 195-231 defeat against Avon in a road match at Blue Fox Run Golf Course.
