East Haven High School Alumni Association Announces 2010 Inductees
The 24th annual Hall of Fame induction of the East Haven High School Alumni Association will be Sunday, Nov. 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Country House in East Haven. Inductees profiled last week were Pasquale "Patsy" DiLungo (posthumously) and Josephine DiLungo, Michael Boney ('98), and Luigi Amasino ('97). Below are profiles for Dr. Scott Mitchell ('85), along with Anthony J. Paolillo ('58) and Dr. Ralph Rosato ('77), who will receive the Distinguished Graduate Award.
Dr. Scott Mitchell ('85)
Mitchell was captain of the football and baseball teams and was named All-Housatonic and All-State as an offensive lineman. During his junior and senior years, he led all defensive linemen in tackles. He is a graduate of Trinity College having earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry. For three years, he was the starting offensive center and helped Trinity win the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship in 1987.
At the University of Arizona, he earned his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry where his research project focused on the design and optimization of molecules that treat pain without dependence and addiction potential. He is employed at CGI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as a senior research fellow with 15 scientists reporting to him from Branford and abroad. Currently he has an anti-cancer drug which he designed in Phase I clinical trials, has authored 18 scientific manuscripts, and is an inventor or co-inventor on 22 patents.
Since 2009, Mitchell has been president of the Momauguin Recreation League, is a Cubmaster, and is an assistant coach in the East Haven Youth Football. He currently resides in East Haven with his wife Jessica and their two children, Christopher and Amelia.
Anthony J. Paolillo ('58)
At age 22, Paolillo was the youngest member of the East Haven RTM. He was a member of the 1957 state championship basketball team and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. In 1987, he was a $1,000 prize-winner for Poetry at the World of Poetry Convention in Las Vegas. He received the Golden Poet Award in 1989, '90, and '92 and has had more than 40 published pieces in various books and papers.
Paolillo is a member of the executive board of St. Andrews Society and has served as chairman of the ad book that has raised thousands of dollars for St. Michael's Church and St. Andrew Cathedral in Amalfi, Italy. For the last six years, he has been an active member of Friends of Jimmy Miller, Inc., a non-profit organization that annually raises funds for the Clifford Beers Clinic of New Haven, Mount Saint John of Deep River, and the St. Francis Home for Children in New Haven. The 2009 event raised more than $165,000. He is also a volunteer member of the Doo-Wop Committee that raises funds for the Leukemia, Lymphoma Myeloma Society of America. As a committee member of the Neighborhood House, he has helped organize an annual dinner to keep alive friendships and tradition of the Wooster Square area. Included is an annual ceremony on the Wooster Street Park, which is held to honor the area wartime veterans who have lost their lives.
Paolillo is also a member of the Gents A.C. of East Haven, St. Maria Maddalena Society, Campania Club, and was president of the East Haven High School Alumni Association from 1993 to 2005.
Dr. Ralph Rosato ('77)
Rosato is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He trained in general surgery in St. Louis and plastic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He entered private practice in Vero Beach, Florida, in 1992 and built his own surgery center, The Rosato Plastic Surgery Center in 1998. Currently he is the 50th president of the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons, past president of the County Medical Society, and president-elect of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Vero Beach.
Recently he joined a team of four from Vero Beach and traveled to Lima, Peru, to join an international team of 25 to treat children with cleft palates at the Loayza Hospital. Rotaplast International is a non-profit humanitarian organization providing free reconstruction and treatment to those with cleft lip/palate and related abnormalities in developing countries. Each year, Rotaplast travels to 15 sites around the world to provide children with life-changing operations. The Rotary Club of Vero Beach sponsored half of the mission after the idea was presented by President Rosato in 2007. The estimated value of the surgeries was more than $440,000.
