The Essex Foundation Beautification Project Expands Its Bloom

Twenty-thousand daffodil bulbs await their fate at the intersection of Routes 154 and 153 in Essex during The Essex Foundation’s most recent gateway beautification efforts in November.

This spring a field of daffodils will be a welcoming sight to those traveling through the intersection of Route 153 and Route 154 in Essex. Thanks to The Essex Foundation’s ongoing gateway beautification efforts, 20,000 bulbs were planted in early November on the state-owned land situated on Route 154 across from the Essex fire station. Sullivan Lawn Service was hired to plant the bulbs in a naturalized fashion, which required several crew members and several days to cover the half-acre expanse. Funding for the bulb purchase and planting services came from a bequest to The Essex Foundation by the late Elizabeth Callender, with additional support provided by The Paul Foundation and Centerbrook Properties. Individual donations are also welcome.

The daffodils will complement the 12 Chanticleer pear trees and over 300 evergreen and perennial ornamentals previously installed in the eastern section of the gateway area over the past two years. Last year, the same group of supporters funded the planting of 3,000 daffodils at Sunset Pond along West Avenue which saw their first bloom in April. Plans are now in the works to plant additional bulbs in the Sunset Pond area in 2020. The Essex Foundation a non profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Essex residents. The foundation is funded through donations from the community and strives to fill needs not met by other organizations or sources.
