Connecticut’s National Philanthropy Day® Annual Awards Honors Local Youth, Ella Shanley

Ella Shanley

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Fairfield County and Connecticut Chapters National Philanthropy Day Annual Awards and Conference is honored to recognize Ella Stanley of Guilford, as their Outstanding Youth for 2019. This award recognizes service by a young person (ages 5 to 17) who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteering and leadership in philanthropy.

Ella, when asked why she volunteers replied: “True meaning in life can only come from the impact we have on others’ lives. I volunteer in order to find purpose in my life and stay motived”. Ella has always been involved in her community from organizing drives to opening minds. She runs Writing Classes for elementary schoolers at the Guilford Free Library. As a teen organizer of the Shoreline Girls United Leadership Conference, she has helped instill the values of leadership in young girls from across the shoreline. Ella understands the way out of poverty is education and as a co-organizer of the St. George Backpack Drive, has donated over 1,400 backpacks filled with supplies over the course of seven years in hopes that these materials will encourage the recipients at the Amistad House, Clifford Beers, and St. Martin de Porres in New Haven to continue their learning. Ella chaired the Youth Advisory Group for two years, working with the Guilford Foundation that awards over $10,000 yearly in grants to worthy organizations in the community, and is president of the Action Against Hunger Club which runs food drives and spreads awareness about access to healthy food. Ella is the President of the Guilford High School Interact Club in which participants run fundraisers to support international organizations such as Honey for Haiti, water filters for Indian villages, and Happy Houses for underprivileged areas. Standing up for legislation she believes in at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation, Ella represented our state as one of two student senators this year. She worked on the first and second annual Big Sleep Out in Guilford in hopes to shift how people view those who are homeless.
