Essex Gateway Now “Ever Greener”

Sullivan Landscaping installs juniper, Norway spruce, Canadian hemlock, and Chanticleer pear trees along the western slope of the Route 9 overpass between Routes 154 and 153 in Essex.

Now in its third year and third phase, The Essex Foundation’s gateway beautification project is 36 trees greener with a recent installation along the western slope of the Route 9 overpass between Route 154 and Route 153. Matthew Verry Landscape Design provided the design and project supervision while Sullivan Landscaping was hired to install the evergreens, which included 10 juniper, 10 Canadian hemlock, 6 Norway spruce, and 10 Chanticleer pear trees. The Essex Foundation kicked off the project in 2016, planting 12 Chanticleer pear trees and over 300 evergreen and perennial ornamentals on the eastern side of the highway bridge in previous project phases. This fall, daffodil bulbs will also be in the gateway area as well as in an expanded area at Sunset Pond along West Avenue where bulbs were planted last November. Funding for the beautification efforts comes from a bequest by the late Elizabeth “Diz” Callender. Supported by donations from the community, The Essex Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Essex by filling needs not met by other organizations or sources.
