She’s Speaking, a local organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women, has announced its 2019 scholarship award Winner. The annual She’s Speaking Empowerment Scholarship was established to recognize and support a graduating senior at Valley Regional High School or Old Saybrook High School who exemplifies leadership potential through her involvement in community service and activities. This year the $1000 award was presented to Kearney Capuano of Old Saybrook High School on May 30 at the school’s senior awards ceremony.

Candidates were required to submit an application outlining their academic performance, extracurricular activities, and how they have demonstrated leadership and have supported or inspired other young women or girls. Ms. Capuano was selected out of an impressive pool of applicants, having demonstrated initiative, leadership, community service and academic excellence. Most notable is her founding of the UNICEF club at the high school; her work with students with special needs through the school’s Unified Sports program and Perfect Pals club; and her selection as a Connecticut Girls to Girls representative at the Women’s Empowerment Conferences at Eastern Connecticut State University. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall with plans to pursue studies in the STEM field.

She’s Speaking is an all volunteer group based on a shared vision of a society where women have an equal voice and value, and the belief that taking action at the local level can have great impact on large scale issues such as pay inequity and under representation in business and government leadership positions. Members are dedicated to raising awareness and helping girls and young women in Chester, Deep River, Essex and Old Saybrook to be self advocates through education, support and inspiration. They have done so through panel discussion presentations, special events, and the scholarship award program. She’s Speaking is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Community Foundation of Middlesex County (CFMC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and relies on the support of donors and sponsors to fund programs and offset operational costs.
