Country School Students Tackle Environment in Elmore Leadership Expo

Meghan Brown speaks as Malala Yousafzai about saving the environment by using words, not weapons.

Country School 6th Graders participated in the 4th Annual Elmore Leadership Expo, which wove together three of the school’s four signature programs: Elmore Leadership, Public Speaking, and STEAM. As an independent summer reading assignment, students selected a famous person – someone they considered a leader – read about him or her, and chose a current topic related to Country’s school-wide environmental STEAM theme. They researched both their leader and topic, created slideshows, and wrote speeches that detailed the importance of the issue and why it would be meaningful to their leader. Theater Arts provided the students with the opportunity to hone their oratorical skills, while in the art studio they fashioned portraits of their leaders. The project even extended beyond the arts through studies in earth science, technology, and mathematics where they used data to support their theses.

Founded in 1955, The Country School serves over 200 students in PreSchool-Grade 8 on its 23-acre campus in Madison. The Country School is committed to active, hands-on learning and a vigorous curriculum that engages the whole child. Signature programs such as Elmore Leadership, Public Speaking, STEAM, and Outdoor Education help prepare students for success in high school and beyond. See our community in action during our Winter Open House on January 27 from 1-3:30 p.m. or schedule a tour. Learn more at www.thecountryschool.org.
