Westbrook Harvest Fair

Westbrook Harvest Fair

As the days grow shorter and the tell-tale colors of autumn slowly creep over the tree cover of our local towns, plans are underway for a new community celebration in Westbrook, the first annual “Westbrook Harvest Fair” on the Town Green on Saturday, October 13, 2018, 9am – 4pm. Initiated by a team from the First Congregational Church of Westbrook, the Westbrook Harvest Fair is designed as a “celebration of community,” bringing artisans and craftspeople, local groups and individuals together with activities and entertainment highlighting the joys of community and the flavors of autumn.

As in many surrounding towns, the Westbrook Harvest Fair will also include a community scarecrow contest, inviting groups, businesses and individuals/families, to display a scarecrow of their own making along the lines of three possible themes: “Local Flavor” (highlighting Westbrook history or character); “Down to Business” (highlighting a local business or group); or “Seasonal Fun” (highlighting autumn themes). More information and entrance forms can be found at: http://westcongchurch.org/westbrook-community-scarecrow-contest-sept-oct-2018/. Scarecrows will be displayed on the Green for the duration of the Harvest Fair and awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons in all three categories by a panel of local “VIP” judges, including Westbrook First Selectman Noel Bishop.

To engage all ages, games for kids (like Pumpkin Ring toss and Hay Bale jumping) will be offered, along with food, music and items for sale. The First Congregational Church will open their doors for a White Elephant Sale and the close-out sale of their “Good Things Shop,” women’s clothing consignment. There will be fall favorites such as pumpkins, Vermont cheese, cider and apple pies for sale as well.

Along with arts, crafts, games and concessions, the First Congregational Church of Westbrook is sponsoring a CROP Walk, a hunger relief charity walk around the center of Westbrook, leaving from the Green at 11:00. Walkers can register to participate at https://www.crophungerwalk.org/westbrookct. The walk is suited for all ages, three miles in length on mostly flat sidewalks in central Westbrook. All monies raised by the CROP Walk go to “end hunger at home and around the world.” A significant portion of the funds raised stay in Westbrook to support the Community Meal program (part of Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries) on Friday nights at the First Congregational Church of Westbrook, 1166 Boston Post Road. The Community meal is a free meal prepared by volunteers for anyone looking for good homemade food shared with friends.

The hope is that this event will bring the Westbrook Community together to enjoy and celebrate our local talent and treasure, as well as our deep running community spirit. For more information about the Westbrook Harvest Fair, please call (860) 399-9367.
