Our Lady of Mercy Returns to its Roots in Madison

Enrolling Now!

Our Lady of Mercy is reopening its school in the same EXACT tradition it began in 1954 by the Sisters Of Mercy, until it was closed by the Archdiocese of Hartford in January 2018.

Our Lady of Mercy School will open in September 2018, as Our Lady of Mercy Preparatory Academy (OLM Prep), its successor school, on 503 Old Toll Road, Madison, CT. It will be an independent private school which will teach to the Catholic tradition and open to all faiths, just as OLMS was until 2006 when the parishes of St. George and St. Margaret's and the Archdiocese of Hartford took control of the school from the Sisters Of Mercy. The school then became a parochial/parish school controlled by the Education Department of the Archdiocese in Hartford. We are very grateful to the priests, parishes and archdiocese that kept this wonderful school open until the announcement of its closure in January of this year.

In 1954, the Sisters Of Mercy began an independent private school, unaffiliated and separate from the archdiocese and the local parish, grade by grade in the Emanuel House, until the completion of the existing school on Neck Road in 1962 and was called Our Lady Of Mercy Country Day School. This was a Novitiate for the Sisters Of Mercy as they were a teaching order where the novices taught the students in the catholic tradition to be “Christ in the World”. Throughout the years these students consistently excelled, academically placing many at fine secondary schools, such as, Choate Rosemary Hall, Hamden Hall, Hopkins Day School, Portsmouth Abbey, Pomfret, Sacred Heart Academy, Mercy High School, Laurelton Hall, Notre Dame High School , Xavier High School, Miss Porter School, as well as enrolling in the public high schools in their respective towns. After many years of a rich history in Madison and along the shoreline, OLM Prep is finally returning to its roots. The reopening of OLM Prep, is not meant in any way to compete with or diminish the importance of any other parochial or private schools. In 2016, the Archdiocese conducted a feasibility study along the Connecticut shoreline which resulted that there should be a catholic school in Madison or Guilford.

During these past 6 months there have been many misconceptions and inaccurate rumors about the reopening of this beloved school in this unique town of Madison where it has successfully co-existed with the excellent public schools and the Country School for 64 years as well as The Hammonassett School, prior to its closure.

OLM Prep welcomes all those who wish to learn more about the school and is looking forward to continuing the academic richness of an independent catholic school that it has been for over 6 decades.
