Talk and Film by area students on Robotics and Education in Haiti

Valley Regional High School seniors: (l-r) Patrick, Rocket, and Sam teaching a robotics workshop this past summer to children at the Deschapelles Community Library, Haiti.

A power point presentation on a Robotics workshop in Deschapelles, Haiti, and a short film titled “Education in Haiti,” both part of Sister Cities Essex Haiti’s Cross-Cultural Program, will be presented at Centerbrook Architects, 67 Main Street, Centerbrook, CT on Sunday, April 22, at 4:30pm.

Valley Regional High School Seniors Sam Paulson, Nick (Rocket) Otte, and Patrick Myslik, from Chester, traveled to Deschapelles, Haiti, this past summer to teach a workshop in Robotics programming to thirty kids aged 8 to 14. The one-week workshop was held at the new Deschapelles Community Library in cooperation with the Sister Cities Essex Haiti Lego project. Sam, Nick, and Patrick will give a power point talk describing their passion for sharing Robotics with Haitian kids who, as it turns out, share the same passion.

College students Olivia Henrikson and Gabe Vasquez wanted to understand the Haitian educational system. They traveled to Deschapelles to research the topic, and the result is a short film titled “Education in Haiti.” Olivia and Gabe interviewed teachers and students and visited classrooms in session. Olivia, a student at Amherst College, and Gabe, currently at Yale University, will show their film and talk about their experience and discoveries.

A question and answer session with the students will follow their presentations. Seating is limited.
