Press Release

Paintings by Eileen Eder at Smilow Cancer Hospital’s Healing Art Gallery at Yale New Haven Hospital through June 30, 2018

Contemporary realist artist Eileen Eder is exhibiting a solo show of large scale waterscapes and still lifes through June 30 at Smilow’s Healing Gallery. The Gallery exhibits original work of juried artists chosen for the ability of the pieces to add to the emotional and physical well being of Smilow patients and families.

Eder’s waterscapes are from the New Haven County shoreline and were painted with the patients and visitors of Smilow in mind. The paintings celebrate a sense of poetry from the natural beauty of our coast along with capturing light qualities of both time of day and weather. The still lifes depict recognizable everyday objects such as bowls, fruit, vases etc. that take on the role of abstract shapes and values. Color, light, shadows, and reflections create a 3D world for viewers to explore. A background view to the outdoors or a reproduced classic painting several pieces extend the depth of the work.

Eileen Eder has been a professional painter and instructor for 20 years. She received her MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 1998. In addition, she has studied at the NY Studio School, Rhode Island School of Design, Hudson River School and with numerous professional artists. Eder currently teaches at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art and Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT. She is a member of the Salmagundi Club, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Lyme Art Association Elected Artists and Hudson Valley Art Association. Eder is a frequent award winner nationally and locally and has been featured in several art publications.

Under the guidance of Rosalyn Cama, president and principal architect of the New Haven interior design firm CAMA, Smilow has established an evidence -based art program expressly for the emotional and physical well being of patients and families. Over 700 original art pieces, each chosen for its ability to empower, soothe and heal, comprise a permanent art display throughout the hospital.

The Healing Gallery is located on the forth floor in the highly-trafficked hospital corridor that serves as the entrance to the hospital from the parking garage. Juried artists are invited to exhibit for six months in a rotating show. The art delights thousands of passersby, including staff as well as patients and families arriving or leaving from their hospital treatments. The gallery reinforces Smilow's belief that "Emotional healing contributes significantly to physical healing.”
