MALTESE PICKED FOR MAYOR

Salvatore Maltese is running for mayor . . . again. This time as a Democrat and with the unanimous endorsement of the East Haven Democrat Party.

“I am pleased and proud to be the Democrat nominee and I am lucky to have such a knowledgeable, dedicated slate behind me.” Maltese said.

“I have been getting extremely positive responses from the public since I formed my exploratory committee a couple of months ago. Folks are tired of the incumbent’s antics. They are tired of seeing the slow deterioration of our town. They want change. And I want change,” he said.

Maltese is a former Board of Finance member. He also is a former Republican who challenged incumbent Joseph Maturo for the GOP mayoral nomination in 2015, subsequently running for mayor as an Independent candidate in that year’s election.

For nearly 40 years, Maltese has owned and operated the South Shore Laundromat on Coe Avenue and he has served as a director of global credit for a $100 million multinational company. Maltese has also been a member of the East Haven Rotary Club, the town’s Shoreline Greenway Trail and library board. Maltese and his wife, Joan, have raised four daughters, all of whom attended and graduated from the East Haven school system.

Noreen Clough, chair of the local Democrat Party, said she was very pleased with the Maltese nomination and with the results of the entire candidate nomination process.

“This was the best convention we have had in several elections. There was unity and excitement,” Clough said. “Sal Maltese is an honest candidate we can all rally behind and he has the best under ticket I’ve seen in years.”

Dominic Balletto, State Democrat Party chair called incumbent Joseph Maturo an “embarrassment” to the town. He cited Maturo’s pending sexual harassment case, filed by a former town employee, as well as Maturo’s recent Supreme Court loss over his claim for a disability pension.

The biggest surprise of the nomination process was the formation of an organized group called “The Republicans for Maltese.” A number of this group’s members attended the Democrat’s nominating convention instead of the Republican convention which was going on at the same time.
