Bill Hahn Remembered

It was a beautiful day on November 13th 2016 when more than ninety people, including past employees, friends and relatives gathered at Water’s Edge Inn & Resort to remember and honor Bill Hahn and his resort that was formerly located on this very same spot more than 75 years ago. Water’s Edge Inn & Resort very graciously provided refreshments and their grand ball room for the event. Among the speakers were Phil Pessoni who spoke about the history of Stannard Hill where Bill Hahn bought the Knothe cottage and turned it into his highly popular resort, also Phil Bassett who told humorous and moving tales of happenings at Bill Hahn’s, and Marcy Fuller who explained Bill’s family tree and related the memories of his cousin Harvey Hahn. Several members of the audience also shared their remembrances of working for Bill. A Power Point presentation allowed everyone to see and enjoy photographs of the development of Bill Hahn’s resort, his many relatives, all the different buildings that made up the resort, his birthday celebrations that included Broadway revues to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and more. Over $700 was raised for the American Cancer Society at the event to emulate Bill’s generosity. He was also a kind and caring employer who loved the town of Westbrook. It was a sad day in April of 1979 when Bill died and his hotel closed for good. A chapter in Westbrook’s history had ended.
