Local Financial Expert Launches New Book

If a major stock market correction is imminent, then those within 10 years of retirement age should act now to protect their financial future, according to a new book out soon by David J. Scranton. Scranton is the TV host of the nationally televised show, The Income Generation, a noted author, market analyst, and local Shoreline financial advisor.

“Return on Principle: 7 Core Values to Help Protect your Money in Good Times and Bad” is Scranton’s second book that educates people and gets them to master what he calls “the inside game.”

Readers will learn a whole new way to think about their finances, specific steps they can take to help secure their retirement, and a roadmap of questions to ask their financial advisor to avoid potential pitfalls.

To get these points across, Scranton often uses compelling sports analogies from his athletic background as well as his own “real life” experiences.

“The stock market is overly inflated and historically, we are due for a severe correction,” said Scranton. “Those retiring within the next 10 to 15 years do not have time to wait for the market to bounce back should this happen at this critical life stage.”

Scranton went on to note that today’s retirees and near-retirees have also lived through two stock market crashes in the last 16 years, the collapse of the housing market, and the worst financial crisis in the U.S. since the Great Depression.

In 2007, when investors throughout the nation were celebrating their growing investment portfolios and 401(k) account values, Scranton, in a client newsletter, warned clients to be

careful and not allow themselves to be “lured into a false sense of security.” Instead of urging them to plow more money into stocks, he reminded them of the 2000–2003 stock market drop and cautioned them that another drop was highly possible.

Scranton is ringing this warning bell again today. Wall Street does not have the best interest of workers in mind, and most workers and investors are at a disadvantage,” he said. “But there are other forms of low–risk investments that will generate income during retirement years.”

Return on Principle outlines these seven core values:

Principle 1 Financial Overprotection: There is a way to look at your investments that is completely different than what you were probably taught. Especially if you were beginning to invest in the 1980s, this chapter teaches you to look at your total stock market exposure when near or in retirement.

Principle 2 Financial Detail Orientation: The devil’s in the details; therefore, the most successful investors are detailed oriented people. Learn which details are important to focus on when protecting your portfolio.

Principle 3 Financial Diligence: Let’s face it, investing takes work. Do you or your advisor have what it takes to stick to it? When you love what you do, diligence doesn’t even seem like work.

Principle 4 Financial Coachability: In today’s changing financial world, one needs to be flexible and adaptable. Learn the best ways to develop a coachable attitude to secure your financial future.

Principle 5 Financial Leadership: A good leader knows when to follow the rules and when to break the rules to obtain maximum results.

Principle 6 Financial Honesty: You simply cannot achieve optimum results unless you as an investor or a financial advisor are willing to be brutally honest with yourself about your strengths and limitations.

Principle 7 Financial Fearlessness: Learn a style of investing that can help you truly become financially fearless. Learn strategies that will make that happen for you.
