The Guilford girls’ tennis team traveled to Cheshire on April 15 and won 6-1. Caroline Hergan won at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-2). Molly Peterson earned a win in the third singles spot (6-0, 6-1), and Sophie Gochman won at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0).
On the doubles side, Mia Hardy and Peyton Lynch won 6-3, 6-0. Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner earned a victory (3-6, 6-3, 6-2), and Kate Gasparini and Breann Shelton also won (6-3, 6-3).
Tow days later, the Grizzlies hosted Lauralton Hall and won 6-1. Kallie Kagan won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, and Caroline Hergan earned a win at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0). Other singles victories came from Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) and Julia Castonguay 7-5, 5-7, 10-5.
On the doubles side, Mia Hardy and Peyton Lynch won 6-2, 6-0, while Olivia Cowperthwait and Breann Shelton won 6-4, 6-3.
On April 19, the team traveled to Waterford and earned a 6-1 victory. Hergan (6-0, 6-1), Peterson (6-0, 6-1), and Zoe Tsoukanelis (6-3, 6-0) earned singles wins.
For doubles, Hardy and Lynch won 6-1, 6-2. Gipson and Kellner earned a 6-1, 6-2 win, and Gasparini and Shelton won 6-1, 6-1.
Baseball
On April 15, the Guilford baseball team hosted Amity and fell 6-0. Guilford recorded two hits in the contest.
The Grizzlies played host to Morgan on April 17 and won 10-7. Lucas Ametrano went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run. Sophomore Tanner Smith threw four innings, allowing just three hits and one run. He earned the win in his first varsity start on the mound.
Guilford took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when four consecutive Grizzlies walked to start the inning, before a run scored on a wild pitch. A Joe Tafro sac-fly made it 3-0. A few batters later, Ametrano drove in Guilford's fourth run on an RBI single. Grizzlies captains Mike Buccaro went 2-for-5 with a double, and Bryce Meder had a double, a stolen base, and earned the save in the victory.
On April 19, Guilford hosted Fairfield Prep and won 9-7. Tafro's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning turned out to be the difference. Mike Buccaro also ripped a double to give Guilford a 4-0 lead.
Softball
The Guilford softball team hosted Jonathan Law on April 15 and fell 11-2. Ella Munson drove in a run for the Grizzlies, and Peton LaMay went 2-for-3 with a double. Adrianna Piascik also recorded a hit. Sarah O’Brien took the mound, pitching seven innings and giving up 16 hits and eight earned runs. She also gave up one walk and recorded two strikeouts.
On April 19, the team traveled to Amity and fell 1-0. Sadie Iozia, Mallory Sedorra, and Addie Smith all recorded two hits in the game, while LaMay and Munson each had one hit. Sophia Meade pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out 13 batters.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On April 17, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team traveled to Sheehan for a tri-meet that also included Shelton. The Grizzlies fell to Shelton 80-66, and they took a 94.5-54.5 loss vs. Sheehan. Andres Gutierrez won the 300-meter hurdles while setting a new Guilford High School record of 39.4 seconds. He also won the triple jump with a 42'0 jump. The boys’ 4x800 team (Enzo Taverna, Alex Milano, Mackinley Cho, and Coleman Love) won with a time of 8:37.7, while Coleman Love won the 800 race with a time of 2:04.4.
James Oberg won the shot put with a throw of 47'2, and Cooper Woods took second in the 3200 race with a time of 10:38.8, and third in the 1600 with a time of 4:47. Stephano Jarin took third in the 200 with a time of 24.0, and fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.9.
Ethan Wienkamp came in second in the javelin with a throw of 147', and Max Freeman placed second in the 400 with a time of 53.3. Milano took second in the 800 with a time of 2:08, and Trevor Ridley took third in the 100 with a time of 11.7. Taverna took fourth place in the 1600 with a time 4:50.5, while Gabriel Grassi took fifth in the 200 with a time of 24.5.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team competed in a tri-meet on April 17 against Sheehan and Shelton. Final scores were Sheehan 101 Guilford 49, and Shelton 98 Guilford 48. Although the girls did not pull out the head-to-head battles, they did have some top performers.
Senior co-captain Clara Gahm won the 3200 meters in 11:29.4, while taking second in the 400 in 62.3. Sophomore Ciara Davenport took second in the 800 in 2:34.3, followed by freshman Olivia Jackson, who was third in 2:39.2.
The 4x800 relay team, led by Paige Ponzio, Sage Schroeder-Wright, Juliana Montgomery, and Ana Sadlon, won in 11:02. Junior Ella Heckler finished second in the 200 in 28.2, and senior Tea Davison was second in the long jump in 14'6.6. Junior Lily Sullivan claimed second in high jump with a season's best jump of 4'8”, while sophomore Anna Hastings was second in the javelin with a throw of 70'3.”
On April 20, the girls traveled to Bethel High School for the Mongovan Invitational. Top performers on the day included Gahm, who won the 800 in an impressive season's best 2:23.23. Also placing in the 800 was Jackson (fifth) in 2:34.26, while also finishing seventh in the 1600 in 5:33.38.
Sophomore Summer Mangan was third in the 3200 in 13:08.23, and junior Daniella Selig was fourth in the 400 in 64.26. Junior Ava Seseske was ninth in the 100 hurdles in 19.47, while Davison jumped 14'11” in long jump, good enough for sixth place.
Junior Cassie Ward was eighth in the high jump with a jump of 4'4,” and Heckler finished eighth in the 200 in 27.86. Hastings was eighth in the discus with a season's best throw of 76'3”. Finishing out the day was the 4x400 relay, led by Selig, Heckler, Montgomery, and Camila Munroe, whick took third in 4:31.96.
