Boys’ Lacrosse Wins Three Contests, Girls’ Lacrosse Takes a Loss

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams boys’ lacrosse team had a busy spring break week, facing four opponents over the week and improving their record to 4-1. On April 6, Old Saybrook lost to a talented Fitch team, while several starters were off visiting colleges. Fitch played well on offense, scoring 15 goals to the Rams’ six. Liam Roberts and Wes Percival each scored two goals in the effort.

On April 10 in Old Lyme, the Rams bounced back, beating the Wildcats 20-6. No. 13 Percival led Old Saybrook in scoring with five goals and two assists. He also won 88% of faceoffs. Eight different Rams found the back of the net with goals in the contest, while junior goalie No. 5 Cole Lawson found his voice and a new stance, netting a season-high 11 saves. Other Rams scorers were Brendan Cassella (four), Roberts and Brayden Cody (three each), Aiden D'Anna (two), Jamieson Lemire (one), Jacob DeAngelo (one), and Greyson Richards (one).

The next day, Old Saybrook, with no rest, headed to Branford to take on the Hornets. The Rams continued their furious scoring streak from Old Lyme and beat the Hornets 16-2. Leading the Rams scoring was No. 1, junior attackman Roberts, with five goals. Branford fought hard, but the Rams offense continued to move the ball well, finding several team members open on the crease for easy goals.

On April 13, the team hosted St. Bernard-Wheeler and won 10-9, thanks to a sudden victory goal by No. 22, D’Anna. The close game was a heated battle to the end. Junior goalie (No. 5) Lawson continued making great saves with an improved stance in between the pipes. The Rams continued to dominate the faceoff X, winning 73% in a combined effort from junior (No. 13) Percival and sophomore (No. 9) Richards. Junior (No. 1) Roberts led the Rams in scoring with four goals and two assists. Also scoring were junior (No. 6) Cassella, Percival, and D’Anna, with two goals each. D’Anna punched home the winning goal with just 0:02 seconds left of the first overtime period on an assist from (No. 12) Jamison Holder. Defensemen Patty Sheahan, Braedan Hagelston, and Holden Lemire did an excellent job protecting Old Saybrook’s goal.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team traveled to New Fairfield on April 13 and took a tough 16-5 loss. It was a game of defense for the Rams. Cali Morelli outdid herself with 16 saves. Protecting the goal were the Rams’ usual defenders, led by Grace Desmond and supported by Emma Courtright and Zoe Parakilas; the remaining defenders included Amelia Sigersmith, Ayla D’Anna, Kendall Dobratz, and Claire Casella. This foursome moved up and down the field as a four-person midfield, as the team was one player short for this game.

The Rams attack was made up of just three players, Sylvie Webber (normal), Julia Maselli (new to the position), and Erin Fiorello (not only new to the position, but normally a goalie for the Rams; it was Erin’s first appearance [but not her last] on the field with a conventional stick).

The first half ended with New Fairfield leading 10-2. The game concluded with an improved and psyched Old Saybrook team and a respectable 6-3 second half. Dobratz was the high scorer with two goals; Sigersmith and D’Anna had a goal and an assist apiece, and Casella had one goal.
