Baseball Wins Three Times, Girls’ Tennis Earns a Shutout

The Hand baseball team hosted North Haven on April 8 and won 4-3. Paul Calandrelli had two doubles and two RBIs. He also recorded his first save of the season on the mound. Payton Powell pitched six innings, allowed four hits, and struck out six batters. Ben Kuja had a double, and Nick Maynard added an RBI.

The Tigers then hosted Jonathan Law on April 10 and won 11-1 in six innings. Derek Piascik went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs. Nick Antonetti had two hits, including a double, and Calandrelli also had two hits, including a double. Tai Nuzzi delivered a two-RBI triple, and Kuja added two RBIs. Brandon SanMarco earned the win and did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings pitched.

On April 11, the Tigers traveled to Xavier and won 4-0. Owen Scarice pitched six shutout innings, scattered four hits, and struck out seven batters. Kuja had a two-RBI single, Piascik and Vinny Benevento both had RBI singles, and Antonetti and Nuzzi both had two hits. Calandrelli struck out all three batters he faced for his second save.

Girls’ Tennis

Hand girls’ tennis traveled to Sheehan on April 10 and won 7-0. Sophomore Maddie Martin, playing at No. 4 singles, notched her first varsity win 6-2, 6-0, with all other lines playing strongly. As a team, Hand dropped only 11 games across all seven matches.
