Girls’ Lacrosse Splits the Week, Baseball Takes a Loss


Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse opened the 2024 season with a big win at home vs. rival North Branford by the score of 15-6 on April 2. Last season, the Rams faced North Branford three times, winning two during the regular season and losing once in Shoreline Conference play.

Scoring was led by team captain and senior Brayden Cody, who scored four goals and added one assist. Juniors Brendan Cassella and Liam Roberts contributed three goals each, while midfielders Wes Percival and senior captain Aiden D'anna each scored twice. Brandon Hestor also found the back of the net once.

After being tied up at the half, the Rams began to shine in the second half of the game, outscoring the Thunderbirds 11-2.

On April 4, the team traveled to Morgan and won 17-4.

The Rams hit the road to Fitch on April 6 and fell 15-6.

Boys’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team hosted Grasso Tech in the season opener on April 1 and won 4-3.

For singles, Drew Demers won 6-2, 6-1, and Peter Pond grabbed a 7-5, 6-3 win.

On the doubles side, Jonathan Bermeo and Carlos Velez won 6-4, 6-4, while Matt Makris and Teddy Chacha earned a victory (6-1, 6-4).

On April 5, the team hosted Old Lyme and fell 5-2.

Girls’ Lacrosse

With six returning players and nine new players this season (eight freshmen and one sophomore), things are bound to be challenging for Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse. In the first league game of the schedule against Morgan on April 4, the Rams won 12-5.

Morgan scored the first two goals while Old Saybrook got its bearings. With mostly veteran players on attack and midfield and mostly new players on defense, the Rams dominated the center draws, coming up with 16 out of 24 tries. On offense, Old Saybrook scored 12 times with 36 shots on goal for a success rate of 33%. Six of the 12 goals were assisted for a very respectable success rate of 50%.

Junior Kendall Dobratz led in scoring with four goals and an assist. Co-captain Ayla D’Anna was the second high scorer with three goals and an assist. Freshman Claire Courtright had two goals and an assist, as did junior Lila Cadley.

Freshman Ainsley Sigersmith tallied once with an assist, while co-captain and the team’s lone senior, Amelia Sigersmith, had three assists. Freshman Sylvie Webber played well on offense behind the goal. On defense, freshmen Julia Maselli, Zoe Parakilas, and Caroline Adams, along with sophomore Emma Courtright, all had the thrill of winning their first high school game. In the goal, Cali Morelli had six saves.

On April 6, the team hosted Fitch and fell 14-2. A very disciplined and experienced Fitch team overwhelmed Old Saybrook with its steady defense, effective clearing, and penetrating shots. The Rams took 20 shots on goal, scoring only twice. Dobratz and D’Anna scored once each, with an assist by Claire Courtright. Co-captain Grace Desmond and Parakilas were standouts on defense. Goalie Morelli had eight saves.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook girls’ tennis started the season at Cromwell on April 1 and won 5-2.

The team then traveled to Old Lyme on April 5 and lost 7-0.

Baseball

On April 6, Old Saybrook baseball hosted Old Lyme and fell 17-2.

Softball

Westbrook/Old Saybrook softball traveled to Haddam-Killingworth on March 30 and fell 13-1.

The team then hosted Whitney Tech on April 1 and grabbed a 14-0 win.

The team hit the road to Hale Ray on April 5 and lost 19-0.
