Boys’ Lacrosse Splits the Week, Golf Wins Opening Match

Golf

North Haven golf hosted Lyman Hall in its first match of the season on April 1 and won 168-188. James Sagnella, with a score of 37, was the medalist for the contest. Other contributors for the Nighthawks were Logan Well (40), Will Sagnella (42), Dinny Ladore (49), Chris Labanara (51), and Kenny Kaminsky (50).

Baseball

North Haven baseball started the season on March 30, hosting Darien and winning 6-5. The Nighthawks scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

Joey Mastroianno (1-3) got the win on the mound and hit the walk-off single to score John O’Neill from second base. O’Neill went 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Aaron Barbour went 1-4 with three walks and a run, and Nicholas Romano went 2-4 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI. Other contributors included Avery Karasinski (2-4), and Luca Faulkner (2-3, RBI).

John Slais, Justin Gouin, and Jordan Higgins all pitched in the contest, as well.

On April 1, the team traveled to Sheehan and won 3-2. James Tobin went four innings on the mound, striking out eight and giving up zero hits. Higgins, Gouin, and Mastroianno finished the game strong. As a group, the pitching staff only gave up one hit and struck out 11 batters. Mastroianno also recorded his first save of the year.

On the offensive side, Romano went 1-3 with a double and one RBI, and Maxwell Cargan went 1-2 with a double and a run scored. Dominic DeSimone (1-3) and Karasinski (1-3) also contributed.

On April 5, the Nighthawks played host to East Haven and fell 2-1.

The next day, North Haven hosted Lyman Hall and grabbed a 6-4 win.

Softball

North Haven softball started the season at home on March 30, falling to Ridgefield 4-1.

The team then traveled to West Haven on April 1 and won 12-3.

On April 5, North Haven hit the road to Mercy and won 5-2.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven boys’ tennis traveled to Cheshire on March 30 for the first match of the season and fell 7-0. Singles participants were Seth Tobin, Parthiv Patel, Jack Segna, and Braden Cohen.

On the doubles side, the Nighthawks used Sam Giering/Nathan Oh, Andrew Bautz/Rob Allison, and Brendan Grudberg/Paul Wilson McCarthy.

On April 6, the team hosted Jonathan Law and fell 5-2. The two wins for the Nighthawks came in singles, as Tobin won 6-1, 6-0, and Priyam Upadhyay won 0-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4).

Girls’ Tennis

The North Haven girls’ tennis team hosted Jonathan Law on April 1 and won 5-2.

On April 5, the Nighthawks played host to Branford and grabbed a 5-2 victory.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Nighthawks girls’ lacrosse hosted Cheshire in the first game of the season on April 1 and lost 21-1.

On April 4, the team traveled to Shelton and fell 11-5.

North Haven faced North Branford at home on April 6 and took a 15-5 loss.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven boys’ lacrosse hosted North Branford on March 30 and won 11-4. Benjamin Pizzano was the lead scorer for the Nighthawks with five goals. Christian Mongillo added three points, Alex Gaetano scored two, and Ryan Longley found the net for one score. Ronan Holt recorded 10 saves in net.

On April 2, the team traveled to Fairfield Prep and lost 16-5. Goals were scored by Pizzano (two), Mongillo (two), and Jack Marro (one). Pizzano and Kevin Parker each tacked on an assist. Holt made 17 saves.

North Haven traveled to Wilbur Cross on April 4 and recorded a 14-0 shutout win. Pizzano and Gaetano scored four goals each, and Marro scored three. Lucas Knauft, Mongillo, and Jake Pieper each added one score. Holt recorded three saves in goal.

The team took a 9-7 road loss vs. Lyman Hall on April 6. Pizzano led the way for the Nighthawks with four goals, followed by Gaetano, Mongillo, and Marro, who scored one apiece. Mongillo also won 17 faceoffs on 20 attempts, and Holt recorded 20 saves.

Outdoor Track

North Haven boys’ and girls’ outdoor track began their seasons on April 5. The girls had a home meet vs. Hamden and Mercy. They took a 93-44 loss vs. Mercy and a 74.5-61.5 loss vs. Hamden.

The boys raced against Hamden and Xavier and defeated both teams. They beat Xavier 96-53 and defeated Hamden 82-68.
