Baseball Wins Two, While Softball Splits the Week

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team hosted Hand on April 1 in the first game of the season and won 6-2. Bryce Meder went six innings on the mound, scattered four hits, and surrendered one run, earning the win as Guilford's opening day starter. Colin Pompano and Joe Tafro both drove in a pair of runs, with Pompano going 3-for-4 to lead the Grizzlies offense in the victory.

Brandon Rosa and Adam Copeland combined to pitch the 7th inning and gave up one total run.

The team traveled to Middletown on April 5 and won 3-1. Lucas Deshefy's 2-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning broke a 1-1 tie in the win. Copeland tossed six innings, allowing just three hits and one run for the win. Massimo Ruotolo earned the save in his varsity pitching debut.

On April 6, the Grizzlies hit the road to St. Joseph and fell 10-7. Meder went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the loss. While Meder's three-RBI, three-hit day led the Guilford offense, both Pompano and Deshefy had two hits apiece. Freshman Cade Rinehart pitched 2-2/3 innings in relief, allowing justone run while striking out a pair in his varsity debut.

Softball

Guilford softball opened the season at home on March 30 and fell 8-3 vs. St. Joseph. Sophia Meade struck out 12 batters over 6.1 innings, while giving up just one earned run (and seven unearned) on four hits. She also doubled at the plate. Kennadie Tansey went 1-for-3 with a double, and Ella Munson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Addie Smith also recorded a double.

On April 1, the Grizzlies hosted Daniel Hand and won 8-2. Tasey went 2-for-3 with a double, while Sarah O’Brien went 1-for-2. Munson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Meade doubled to drive in a run and also scored. Smith drove in three runs with a double and a home run. Meade threw six innings and struck out 12 hitters, while giving up just two earned runs.

Girls’ Tennis

The Guilford girls’ tennis team opened the season on April 1 with a 7-0 shutout win vs. Hamden at home.

Boys’ Tennis

Guilford boys’ tennis hosted Sheehan on March 30 and won 7-0, led by No. 1 singles player Tomas Kharabadze (7-6, 6-0).

The team then traveled to Wilbur Cross on April 1 and won 6-1. Freshmen Zach Milano, Brant Sankey, and Asher Zide led the way in the victory.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Branford on April 2 to open the season and won 17-3.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford girls’ lacrosse opened the season on April 2 with a 10-6 home win vs. Mercy.

The team then traveled to Branford on April 4 and won 8-5.
