Fencing Shows Out at Conference Championship, Boys’ Basketball Wins Two

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball team traveled to Morgan on Feb. 19 and fell 70-66. Kyle Hoffman led the way with 24 points, followed by several others in double digits. Those players included Sam Markovitz (12 points), Aidan Doyle (10 points), Elijah Avery-Turner (10 points), and Thomas McCullough (10 points).

On Feb. 22, the team hosted Sheehan in the first round of the SCC Tournament and won 67-28.

In the quarterfinals on Feb. 24, the Tigers hosted Wilbur Cross and earned a 57-53 victory. Hoffman and Avery-Turner led the way, with 13 points each. McCullough and Markovitz added nine points apiece in the contest.

Fencing

The Hand women’s fencing team traveled to Morgan on Feb. 21 for its last conference meet of the year. The Tigers came away victorious, with a 17-10 victory. Entering into the conference championships, the women’s epee team was seeded first, foil was seeded second, and saber was seeded third.

Guilford hosted the championships on Feb. 24. The epee team had a bye in the first round of the competition. In the second round, the squad faced Guilford, where it came away with a 5-1 victory. In the final round, Hand faced Morgan, earning a 5-0 win. Senior captains Arianna Takyar and Norah Stotz both finished the day 5-1, while fellow senior Addy Morada was a perfect 6-0.

The women’s foil team also had a first round bye, and then faced Morgan and earned a 5-2 win. In the gold medal match, Hand took on the No. 1 seed Guilford, and lost a very close 3-5 meet, finishing in second place. Juniors Maeve Wiles and Shay Ryan led the way for the women’s foil team.

The women’s saber team fenced Simsbury in the first round, coming away with a 5-1 win. In the second round, the team faced off against Guilford and lost 0-5. With no playoff for third, and the No. 1 seed North Haven being upset by Morgan, the saber team finished in fourth place. Overall, the women’s team finished in second place overall in the conference championships.

After the event, the All-Conference and All-Academic awards were handed out. To earn All-Conference, you must have one of the top eight winning percentages in the conference. To be All-Academic, you must be in the top four, and have a GPA above 3.5.

Earning First Team All-Conference and All-Academic in epee were Takyar and Morada. In saber, First Team All-Conference and All-Academic was senior Lily Paine, and Second Team was senior Anna Ferrucci and junior Ella O’Malley. For foil, First Team All-Conference and All-Academic honors went to Ryan and Wiles, with Second Team All-Conference honors going to senior Sarah Hagen.

The men’s fencing team also traveled to Morgan on Feb. 21 for its last conference meet of the year. The Huskies came away victorious with a 18-9 victory, with all of their squads winning.

Entering into the conference championships, the men’s epee team was seeded second, foil was seeded fourth, and saber was seeded second. The squads finished in the same positions.

The men’s epee team first took on Simsbury, who the squad defeated 5-0. In the second round, they faced a Guilford team that was on a hot streak and lost 2-5.

The men’s foil team also took on Simsbury in the first round, and won 5-1. In the second round, they also lost to Guilford 3-5. Guilford then went on to face North Haven and was upset 4-5, giving the Nighthawks the championship.

Hand’s saber team had a first round bye, and then faced Morgan, where the athletes came away with a 5-1 victory. In the gold medal round, the Tigers lost to Guilford, 2-5.

After the event, the All-Conference and All-Academic awards were handed out. Earning First Team All-Conference and All-Academic in men’s epee was senior Hanley Tapia. Sophomore Robbie Ginsburg earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

In men’s foil, junior Ricky Chamarro earned Second Team All-Conference, and in men’s saber, junior Will Butler and freshman Owen Swift earned First Team All-Conference and All-Academic honors. Junior Noah Lynch earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
