On Sept. 22, the Haddam-Killingworth football team hosted Coginchaug/Hale Ray/East Hampton and lost 31-14. Joe Slane caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Lacoss, and Tyler Napierkowski scored on a one-yard run for the Cougars. On defense, Jay Evans had an interception for H-K, and Tyler Dixon had a strong game as the Cougars’ leading tackler.
Head Coach Tyler Wilcox feels that his team is still learning to jell and overcome the inexperience on its roster.
“We shifted the momentum in the second quarter and had Coginchaug on their heels going into the locker room at halftime,” said Wilcox. “But our youth showed again. We made too many mental mistakes as a group. We’re so close at times, but still have work to do.”
Boys’ Soccer
The H-K boys’ soccer team traveled to Valley Regional on Sept. 19 and won 5-0.
Three days later, the team hosted Old Lyme and won 3-2.
Girls’ Soccer
Girls’ soccer hosted Derby on Sept. 20 and won 6-0.
The next day, the team traveled to Old Lyme and tied the game 0-0.
Field Hockey
H-K field hockey traveled to Westbrook/Old Lyme on Sept. 19 and ended in a 0-0 draw.
On Sept. 22, the Cougars hosted Old Saybrook and lost 3-1.
Girls’ Volleyball
Cougars volleyball played host to North Branford on Sept. 18 and won 3-2.
Then two days later, the team traveled to Valley Regional and lost 3-2.
On Sept. 22, H-K hit the road to East Hampton and lost 3-1.
Girls’ Swimming
The H-K girls’ swim team won its season opener at Ledyard on Sept. 19 by a score of 93-73. The teams were tied three times before the Cougar girls pulled ahead after the 500-yard freestyle event at the midpoint of the meet, holding the lead until the end.
H-K junior Olivia “Liv” Macaluso qualified for the State Championship in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming a 1:10.73. Twelve swimmers scored the winning points for H-K: Elsa Shatraw (freshman), Emma Sajus (senior), Gianna Dabkowski (freshman), Layla Hayward (senior), Maggie Miller (sophomore), Olive Forristall (freshman), Olivia Campo (junior), Macaluso, Peyton Tyler (senior), Sofia Campo (junior), Sophia Langer (freshman), and Veronica “VV” Pypa (junior).
Top-three finishes for H-K included the 200-yard medley relay team of Hayward, Sofia Campo, Macaluso, and Dabkowski, who took first place; and Shatraw, Forristall, Sajus, and Olivia Campo, who claimed third.
Miller won the 200-yard freestyle, with Tyler in second. In the 50-yard freestyle, Hayward claimed second place and Forristall came in third. Sajus took second in the 100-yard butterfly, while Dabkowski took second place in the 100-yard freestyle. Tyler finished right behind her in that event, in third place. In the 500-yard freestyle, Miller took first place and Shatraw took third. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dabkowski, Tyler, Sajus, and Miller took first place, while Forristall, Olivia Campo, Pypa, and Sofia Campo took third in that event.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Macaluso took first place, with Hayward in second. Forristall claimed second place in the 100-yard breaststroke. Finally, Miller, Sajus, Tyler, and Macaluso won the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Shatraw, Langer, Pypa, and Hayward finishing in third place.
Cross Country
On Sept. 23, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Derryfield Park in Manchester, New Hampshire to compete in the 49th annual Manchester Invitational against more than 80 teams from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
The boys’ varsity team ran well on the hilly 3.1-mile course to place third out of 37 schools overall as a team in the Small School Race with 154 points. The boys were led by junior co-captain Jack Cozean, who crossed the line in a time of 16:45 to place 15th in the race out of 262 total runners. He was quickly followed by teammate and sophomore Daniel McCourt, who ran 16:49 to place 19th. Next to cross the line were sophomore Alex Frederickson 44th (17:48), sophomore Cash Smigel 47th (17:55), and senior co-captain Luke Hedges 50th (17:58) to round out the team scoring.
The girls’ team, once again missing two of its top runners, also had a strong race as the Cougars placed seventh as a team in the Small School Race with 268 points. They were led by sophomore Grace Mitchell, who placed 28th in the race with a time of 20:59 and was immediately followed by freshman Charlotte Behnke in 29th (21:03). Following them were junior Kira Sehl-Albert in 66th (22:05) and sophomores Julia Downing 95th (23:03) and Amelia Riggs 106th (23:33).
