06/05/2023 12:48 PMAfter an intense week of competition, the results looked a little different than normal in the Deep River Horseshoe League. In Week Five, standings underwent an unusual shuffle, with three teams tied for first, three teams tied for fifth, and three teams tied for eighth.
Mike Zanelli Sr. led his Giants to a 4-2 win over Todd Nuhn’s Yankees. His 141 series was the top score for “A” division players. The Giants are now in a tie for first place with the Yankees and Royals.
Sherly Serviss’ Tigers prevented John Sciacca’s Royals from taking sole possession of first place with a 3-3 split in their match. Royals’ John Hutra was the top “B” scorer for the second week in a row, with a season-best 133 series. Tigers’ Susan Feaster’s 68 series was the third highest among “C” division players. The Royals now share first place with the Giants and Yankees.
The Pirates and White Sox squared off in a high-scoring match. Skip Robertson’s Pirates were the top-scoring team with 314 points, while Frank Rausch’s White Sox were the third highest with 295 points. Additionally, the teams had three players make the top three scores for the night. Pirates’ Brady Miller’s 125 series was a personal best, and was the second-leading “B” division scorer. White Sox’s Vinny Jonynas’s 108 series was the third-best “B” scorer. Pirates’ Deb Scully, who has made the top three for the third week in a row, had a 79 series and was the second for “C” division players. The Pirates won the match 4.5-1.5. Both teams are tied for fifth place in the standings, along with the Mets.
Kris Toohey led his Cardinals to a 4-2 win over Mike Zanelli Jr.’s Braves, and they are alone in fourth place but only 1/2 game out of first. Kris’s 126 series was the third-best score for “A” division players. The Braves are currently in a three-way tie for eighth with Mike Didomizio’s Rockies and Dennis Allen’s Orioles. Mike was the second leading scorer for the “A” division with a 134 series as the Rockies defeated Joe Heery’s Rangers 4-2. This came on the strength of Paul Chrystal’s season-high 96 series, which led all “C” division players. The Orioles defeated Cody Layton’s Cubs 5-1 to get in the three-way tie for eighth.
