Guilford Baseball Wins SCC Championship; Girls’ Tennis Advances in State Tournament

Baseball

Baseball grabbed a trio of wins last week to bring their season to 20-3. The team hosted Sheehan on May 22 in a 5-3 victory before hosting Xavier on May 23 for a 6-2 win.

Versus Sheehan, Mike Buccaro hit a two-run single and Lucas Deshefy got the win on the mound. He went two innings, allowing zero runs on one hit. Lucas and Sam Ametrano each recorded multiple hits for the Grizzlies and Alex Vincent made the most plays in the field with seven. In the game versus Xavier, Andrew Shosho pitched six and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four batters. Lucas Deshefy recorded the last two outs for the save. He also strung together multiple hits at the plate, as did Carter Williams.

On May 25, they hosted Fairfield Prep, taking a 10-7 victory to win the SCC Championship. Lucas Deshefy was named SCC Player of the Year and First Team All-SCC, and Head Coach Nick Merullo was named Coach of the Year for the conference. Bryce Meder was also named First Team All-SCC. Sam Ametrano, Lucas Ametrano and Andrew Shosho were named to the All-SCC Second Team.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Girls’ lacrosse split the week, picking up a win and a loss on the road. The Grizzlies traveled to Madison on May 22, defeating Hand 15-4. They hit the road to Cheshire on May 24, falling 14-7 in tournament play. The team is now 12-7. Attacker Payton Root was named First Team All-SCC, as were midfielders MJ Santa Barbara and Ella Clarke. For defense, Kat Baseggio and Scout Climie were named to the First Team.

Softball

Softball took a loss in its sole contest last week in SCC Tournament action. The team hosted Cheshire on May 22 and fell 5-2 in the effort. The Grizzlies are 14-7. Addison Smith and Ella Munson were named First Team All-SCC and Sophia Meade earned Second Team honors.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford boys’ lacrosse played in the first round of the SCC Tournament on May 21, falling to Notre Dame 11-7. The team is now 8-9 for the season. Midfielder Tyler Hilgert and FO Liam Alberti both earned Second Team All-Conference honors for Division I.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis sandwiched a loss between two wins last week. The team hosted Daniel Hand on May 22, grabbing a 5-2 win. Singles players Riley Mullett (6-1, 6-3), Kallie Kagan (8-6), Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) and Peyton Lynch (6-2, 6-1) all recorded wins in the effort. The doubles pairing of Kate DeAngelo and Mia Hardy took a 6-0, 6-2 win.

They traveled to Amity on May 23 and fell to their hosts 6-1 in SCC Tournament play. They bounced back on May 27, defeating Pomperaug 7-0 in the first round of the Class L State Tournament. Riley Mullett grabbed a victory at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-2). Caroline Hergan (6-3, 6-0), Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) and Olivia Cowperthwait (6-0, 6-1) also won. For doubles, Izzy Bowman and Peyton Lynch (6-1, 6-1), Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner (6-2, 7-5) and Kate DeAngelo and Mia Hardy (6-2, 6-0) won their contests. The team is now 19-5.

Riley Mullett was named to the Tier 1 All-SCC Team for her efforts this spring and Head Coach Chris Marra was named Coach of the Year.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team competed in the SCC Championship on May 23 at Bowen Field in New Haven. Guilford finished 12th overall as a team with 28 points.

Top performers included junior standout Clara Gahm, who finished third in the 1600 in a season’s best 5:15.02 and came back to take third in the 800 as well in 2:20.48. Senior co-captain Alexa Suchy ran a season’s best time of 11:34.88 in the 3200 to take fourth place, with senior co-captain Olivia Kaisin taking eighth place in 12:11.46.

The 4x400 relay team of sophomores Daniella Selig, Agnes Batters, Ella Heckler, and Riley Hickey ran their best time of the year (4:13.88) which was good enough for fourth place. Sophomore Lily Sullivan cleared 4’10” in high jump to take home fourth place.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Guilford boys’ outdoor track competed in the SCC Championship on May 23 at Bowen Field in New Haven. The 4x800 relay team (Alex Hansen, Alex Milano, Bretton Garrick, Michael Masotti) took third place (8:22.7). Andres Gutierrez came in fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (40.93) and fifth in the triple jump (43’.5). Coleman Love came in fourth in the 1600 meters (4:32.53) and Jack Faitsch came in eighth in the 1600 (4:40.06).

Crew

The Guilford rowing team traveled to Lake Waramaug in New Preston, Connecticut on May 21 for the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association Sprints Championships. Guilford brought a total of six crews to the race – two boys’ eights, two girls’ eights, and a boys’ four and a novice girls’ four.

In girls’ first varsity eights racing, the Guilford crew was comprised of seniors Hailey Hutchison, Panorea Vasiliou, Ashlyn Garrick, and Katherine Hicks; sophomores Ava Meglio, Tea Hawkes, Olivia Hwang, Addi Smith and Mattea Jerbi. In their morning heat, the Guilford girls finished third, advancing them to the grand final in the afternoon. The Guilford girls finished fifth with a time of 5:52.8 over the 1,500-meter course. East Lyme won the championship, but the second to fifth place finishers were all within five seconds of one another, making for good high school racing.

The boys’ first varsity eight included senior Bradyn Benben; juniors Ryan Michna, George Fenollosa, George Wiley, Cooper Formica, Tyler Skapczynski, and Sofie Shanbhag; and sophomores T.J. Chamberlain and Colton DeBoda. In their morning heat, they finished second, also qualifying them for the Grand Final, where they finished sixth with a time of 5:16.9. Simsbury finished first. The girls’ second eight finished fourth in their final; the boys’ varsity four finished fifth in their final, and the novice boys’ eight finished fourth in their morning eight and did not advance to the finals.

The lone Guilford boat to medal at the championships was the novice girls’ four. Comprised of sophomores Brianna Dang and Jenna Marra; and freshmen Leah Jackson, Annabelle Potter and Anna Esplugues, the crew raced in a final against Lyme-Old Lyme and Lewis Mills and won comfortably with a time of 6:56.4.
